Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Spuddering Diesel

Question for you all...

I have a 02 2500. It has been sitting in my driveway (unplugged) for a little over a week. Temps have been anywhere 20 to 30 degrees. I started it up Sunday afternoon and it cycled the heaters, no problem. Started right up - let it sit and idle for about 15 to 20 minutes. Moved it down the driveway and parked it. Started it up tonight and it fired right up, but smoked like crazy, ran really rough. Stepped on the pedal and would rev up, but skip like crazy. I took it down the road and it cleaned itself out and runs fine now.

What causes this? This happend one other time in the middle of winter.



I am in Vermont, the fuel is all blended up here, and I put in PowerServices fuel treatment every other fill up during the winter for the extra added protection of the anti-gel.



Would this be because I let it idle so long and then just shut it down?

First off Letting it sit and idle for 15-20 mins is bad. You are really doing more harm than good. The engine really does not warm up to rperating temp and you also run the risk of "Washing" your cylinder walls down with unburned fuel.

On top of that parking it after an idle period like that will form varnish deposits on exhaust valves and that is NG as well. What you experienced in a sense could be just that a "Loaded up" Engine. LOL I just came back from VT and man it sure is not cheap up there! Pilot here in Milford was @ 1. 34 when I left. Once I crossed up past Putney VT I saw what 1. 52

It was a combination of cold fuel, cold engine, and unburned crap in the cylinders. Just start it up and warm up the engine. No harm done, just drive it good to clean everything out.

Sounds like a cold diesel to me. You should hear/see the gmc Brig. with a 3208cat after "sleeping" for awhile in the cold. Its a FOG!!! and youd think it was going to shake apart!!!! It sounds horrific but after a minute or so she purrs!

Do a search on here for "High Idle" TSB and you will love it! I dont plug mine in just so I can hear it rev up and pi** off the neighbors even more! :-laf

From now on no more long idles and shutting her down. It all happened last snow storm when I started it and let is sit while i was plowing. Moved it around the driveway so I could plow then shut it off.



Took it to work today, no problems!



I will look into the high idle posts.

Going to be pushing the snow conditions in 2 weeks... the sun is starting to take its toll on some of the trails. Further northeast (Jay, Island Pond, Cannan) are still great. Went out for a 50 mile ride after work last night... great riding!
