A friend of mine just bought a 2001 ext. cab short box 1/2 ton 4x4 dodge and it has a very annoying squeking rattle sound when you hit a bump and when you slow down you can hear it alot better, where should i start looking first?

It sounds like what I had. If it is an auto check the shift lever linkage underneath the truck. Have someone rock it pretty good while under it and you will be able to find it. WD-40 stopped it for awhile, but won't cure it for long. I took mine to the dealer before running out of warranty and they took care of it. They said it is very common. Hope this helps

Check the intermediate shaft joint between the column and the gear. Look closely and you might see a touch of red rust where the flex joint has moved on the steering shaft. If you take the shaft out to clean and lube it, DO NOT turn the steering wheel or you ruin the air bag clock spring. I think I might be able to find a picture of the joint if you need it.

nfox, you might want to take a look at a thread on the same subject that was started by jjohn on 1-5-03. The fix talked about worked for he and I. He has some pictures of area to look at also.

might want to check the front track bar, my 1998 dodge made a squeking rattle sound when i hit a bump. Check it out and my track bar was very wore out.
