My 2001 Short Bed 4x4, HO 6 speed has developed a squeaking noise while in a right or left turn going over bumps.

The noise is like sheet metal to sheet metal. It does not occur going straight over bumps, only in a turn. It is worse in a right turn, but is also there in a left turn.

I have pried, wiggled, rocked, and in lots of other ways tried to find the sound when parked, but no results. The noise only occurs when moving and in a turn.

I suspect the front brakes or wheels.

Any suggestions?? Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem. In my signature you can see what truck i have, almost the same as yours. I've taken it to the dealer, and they told me that it doesen't squeek long enough to pin point the problem. It seems to do it more when its cool or damp outside, on a dry warm day its doesen't squeek as much. I've read other post with simular problems, and there saying its the shocks, but I think we have something different. To me it sounds more like its coming from the inside of the cab, mabey around the steering column. I haven't taken the time to look under the steering column yet but I'm going to. It drives me crazey as well, espically when you have someone riding with you. You pay $30+ thousand dollars you expect it not to rattle or squeek. Be patient,I have 11k miles and plenty of waranty left, plenty of time left. On the other hand 30k a year I don't have to much longer. Anyhow, sorry for rambling and let me know if you come up with anything.

Mine does it too. I think it is coming from where the steering column goes through the firewall. When the wheel is turned it touches stuff it normally doesn't. Have not climbed under there yet.

Me too. Someone had posted a tip on this. Check the universal joint on the steering column next to the engine side of the fire wall. Purported fix is to give this joint a bath in lube (WD 40?). I have not tried it yet, but am going to see if this cures it. BTW, my dealer did seem to be aware of this "fix" if the joint is the problem.

Well - here's another "Me Too" - you are right about happening in the wet (raining there abouts). Sounded more like a suspension issue - something adrift and I only have 6200 "Babying" miles on mine.

Another one here.

Thanks a lot!

Mine was not making any noise UNTIL I read it here!

I just sprayed mine down, so I'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Same problem. I have a 2001 4X4 long bed with the eth/dee. What are the common denominators here? Mine only manifests itself when I am turning, and hit any kind of bumps. It seems to happenn more often turning to the right. Seems strange, but a real annoyance in a $30K+ truck. BTW I have about 12,000 miles on it.

So far, most of you that have replied have the ETH/DEE combo of engine and transmission.

I checked the front steering tie rod ends, pitman arm end, and the 4 x 4 front axle tracking bar?? that keeps the axle in line which side loads from a turn are applied.

No signs of dry joints or any noise whatsoever.

I'll keep looking.

I had the same problem until I read a post in the engine/drivetrain forum. There's a little u-joint in the steering column. Douse it in WD-40, and presto! the squeak is gone.

JJMiller, That's where mine was. It might have been my post. It would aggrevate the stew out of me going around a curve. Couldn't find it. Then one day I was changing my fuel filter and dumped a load of diesel on that u-joint. The squeak disappeared. Since then, I lube it every oil change and wipe off the excess. No more squeak. The only noise I have now (besides the engine) is a squeak that appears and disappears in the weatherstripping at the top of the driver's door. I have done everything to it. On a damp day it will appear and then disappear when it gets dry. Maybe I'll dump the fuel filter contents on it #ad
.

My 99 started to squeak last April. It is definitely coming from the steering column. I took the box apart but couldn't find anything or duplicate the noise while sitting. Only does it when driving and not all of the time. I'm going to try spraying the steering column u-joint and see if that works. By the way, when I move the wheel slightly to the right while driving, the noise stops. I keep the suspension lubed regularly so I don't want to blame that yet.

Any other ideas? I hosed the upper steering u-joint with a silicon lube a few days ago. No change. More lube? A different lube? My is definitely related to turning. It shows up the loudest with a 1/8 to 1/2 turn to the right. I can be going down a rough dirt road with very little noise, a slight turn to the right starts the crickets to singing. Left does not make much noise, but a little more than straight ahead. I hear there is a clock spring in the column?? Could it be this spring? If it is in the column, I will let DC take a stab at it under warranty.

My 2001 ETC w/AT is doing it as well. Seems like it is coming from the the bottom of the driver's side a-pillar near where it meets the dash. Going to take the a-pillar (and gauges :( ) off and go for a ride. Mine sounds like crickets and only does it on a bumpy road during a slight turn to the left or the right. No noise with sharper turns. It's definitely not the u-joint on the steering column. Driving me nuts!!

Has anyone figured this out yet??

Bang on Description

Zman,

You described my noise better than I could:D

I don't know what is causing it, yet. If it is not related to the steering, why doesn't it do it in a straight ahead attitude?

I notice that my dash and left "A" pillar are making contact, with a plastic dust reside showing up from rubbing, but I am not convinced that is causing the noise. My whole dash is shifted to the left, or the cab is shifted to the right. I have a lot more clearance between the right "a" pillar and than dash, than I do on the left side.

Should we offer a prize to the first person to figure this out?

Shelby -

I do think my squeak is turn related, but not the u-joint on the steering shaft. I stuck my head as far forward between the dash and windshield as I could to try to nail down the approximate location of the noise. I'm sure I looked pretty funny going down the road with my head stuffed b/w the dash and windshield. Definitely coming from the general area of the lower driver's side a-pillar.

My guess is that the chassis gets in just the right bind to cause enough movement of something that it rubs during slight turns on bumpy roads. I'm also guessing that during sharp turns that what ever is rubbing together is actually pressed together tight enough that it doesn't rub any more.

I wish someone would figure it out! VERY annoying!

Well i still have this problem as well. It really bad when I hit a bumpy exit that curves around. Well I guess its just bad anytime when Im truning my wheel over any bumps. Let me know if you figure it out. The dealer said they would fix when they replaced my clockspring but its back.

Count me in on this one as well. Don't know when my 99 started doing this but was dreading taking it to the Dealer.

My wife tells me I'm almost deaf but I sure can hear the squeak when breaking and turning right or left on bumpy pavement. I'll try lubing the steering u-joint but think it's going to be something else.

If anyone else figures this out, please post the answer.

Thanks,

Frank Dz
