2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Squeakin dash, please help

On the way to the farm I started hearing a squeak or a slight rattle. I put up with it till I got home and wifey rode with me after unloading to help locate it. Sounds like it is behind the glove box. We arranged stuff in there and still squeaks. It sounds like a slight plastic rattle or something rubbing. I have checked everything I know! I will check the bhaf this evening to see if it is rubbing on something. Are there any bolts or screws between the glove box and firewall to vibrate loose? I tried to wiggle teh dash and it seems tight. This is driveing me crazy. Any and all help or suggestions will be appreciative.

Not sure if you tried this or not, but I just finished the install of my on the dash cb mount without drilling the dash and used the center dash mount way up close to the base of the windshield on top of the dash. When I went to loosen the bolt, I could do it by hand. All three ended up being the same way. You need a long extension and like a 3/8" socket (I think).

Are these in the center on top or do you have to come in from the bottom? Thanks, maybe we will get another idea or two.

They are on top of the dash just at the base of the windshield waaaay up front.

BTW, mine didn't squeak before or after I tightened them.

FWIW, I've read on here that people have found the plastic piece at the base of the windshield on the outside to be loose and causing squeaking/rattling noises.



I plan on checking mine this week as I too seem to have developed a squeak since the weather turned wet/rainy/dark/what-have-you.

have similar problem. squeeks when turning less than 90 deg driving over bumps. this comes from the steering intermediate shaft u-joint. dealer replaced shaft with upgraded shaft that was designed to correct the cond. 7000 mi. later cond. reappeared. now dealer will not call me back. this u-joint is on eng. side of firewall but squeek sounds like it is in the dash. try spraying joint w/ lube. hope this helps!

I had an annoying sqeaky sound for several months and about went nuts looking for it. Sounded like it was INSIDE the truck. Then I discovered the loose plastic shield at the base of the windshield. Tightened it up, squeaky all gone!

Thanks for all the tips. Maybe someone will tell me the exact place so I can get this thing taken care of. I will check these things and keep my fingers crossed.

If your noise is a creak and not a squeak it will be the body sheet metal making the noise.

It sure sounded like it was from behind the glove box but it wasn't. I removed the glove box and pass. air bag and stuffed my head under there while someone else drove.



I tightened every damn bolt there was out side.



Finally I removed the air filter and plastic shroud below wipers and stuck a screwdriver in any slot or space where body sheetmetal came together.



On my truck it ended up being the metal below where the computer box is behind the air filter towards the firewall. I stuffed a screwdriver in there and bent it a bit and it was finally gone.



Damn creaking noises sound like they are coming from everywhere and it sure drove me nuts.

Burndog, please send it to me, this sounds exactly where it is coming from. Although it sounds like a light rattle or slight tapping I am willing to try it. I know it is driving me crazy. Thanks for the advice. Okie

This is what I do to elimanate squeaks. Pound on the mother @#*@er til it stops. Mechanic who has worked on my truck says how quiet mine is compared to the others he's ridden in.

Look out for that snow

I have an occasional sharp, nasty pop that eminates through the steering column and cowl area, I'm sure it's not the steering column. A couple years ago I was screwing around in a parking lot with piles of snow showing off to the kids, decided to blast through a pile of snow. Well that didn't happen, instead the snow didn't yield and I launched the frontend of my truck at least 1 foot off the ground. The tire on the driver's side took the full brunt. I might have done some harm to the cab at that time. Didn't do anything else other than tweak the front end alignment



I thought about removing the front fender to check into possible broken welds because it sounds like 2 pieces of sheetmetal gettin g hung up on each other then suddenly letting go when I hit a bump. Body feels tight otherwise.

There are some nuts on the studs from the A/C housing coming through the firewall there. You should find about 4 or 6 of them, make sure that they are tight, this may be where it's coming from. They are all in the same area as the picture above, I know you have to unbolt the PCM (not remove it) to get the A/C housing out.
