I've had my truck for almost a year now and it has developed a squeak when I shut the engine down, I haven't been able to track it down to where I can say it does it whenever it's... .

seems some what related to how long I let the engine idle after running, it's worse if I shut it off Hot but I try to let it idle for atleast a minute, I wait a lot longer if I've been on the highway or loaded. (don't shut it off at all when stopping on road trips).

in the same respect it also seems worse when I have the AC on, my AC clutch engages and disengages alot with the AC off, (stealer said it was normal???), so I am not sure if that could be the culprit.

it's a '01 QC Auto, I run Delvac 1 - 5w40 oil in it.

any suggestions??

thanks!

It's normal with the stock serpentine belt and seems to do no harm. Automatic-equipped trucks seem to be more prone to it because of their lower rotating mass (no flywheel). The chirp is mentioned in the FAQs, and discussion can be found by using the TDR search function. I consider it part of the truck's personality and plan to do nothing about it, outside of replacing the belt when it shows signs of wear.

BTW, welcome to the TDR. You've come to the right place! :D

Most likely it's the serpentine belt slipping. Very common. Replace it with a Goodyear Gatorback belt part #4080810 or Napa 8PK2055 and your problem will disappear.

Squeaky Belt on shutdown

Replace your slush box with a manual:D Really now - there have been 5 in our family and not one squeaks and every time I hear one it comes from those with auto's.

squeak 'n a/c

seems a bit unusual that the serpentine belt would just now start squeaking, after a year. my 01 squeaked and chirped at shut down from day 1. is the squeak while the engine is still running, or right as the engine stops turning? if the timing is exactly as the engine stops rotating, prolly the belt--engine stops rotating very abruptly; the alternator and fan are still rotating, and slip inside the belt, thus the chirp or squeak.

as far as the A/C compressor, there are two positions on my rotary switch where the compressor does NOT cycle... "OFF" and the vent position where the air is coming through the dash only. even though not indicated, the A/C is running on the dash/feet position, and runs with the defroster positions.

I would not be able to tell if the engine stopped when I turned the key off if it did not schreech. Kind of like the remote lock beep.

Squeeking

I have occasionally heard my rig do that.

I have also noticed that if I wash the engine down (usually with Castrol Super Clean) it stops immediately.

I have now relocated that GD pill bottle about a foot lower using a double male barbed connector and a foot of 3/4" heater hose ( a rather expensive investment of about $2. 00 ) and am waiting to see if it squeeks in the future.

My own personal theory is that the oil vapor from the pill bottle had some play in this squeeking syndrome. I hope to be able to tell you all more in the future.

My '02 owners manual says this is normal. Says because of the torque, when the engine shuts down, it does so quicker than the belt can stop moving, hence the squeek. I thought all engines had a fly wheel, isn't that what the starter engages?

belt chirp

diesel gunner, i doubt your moving the pill bottle will affect the chirp. i have my blow by dumped back by the transfercase with heater hose. made no difference in the chirp.

dbeeman, the compression on the mighty cummins is high enough to stop the engine abruptly even with a flywheel, when the fuel is removed.

Inconsistancy in occurance between trucks may be due to difference in spring tension in belt tensioner.

Just a thought. :)

DBeeman,

Auto equiped trucks have a "flex plate" instead of a regular flywheel, it is a light, maybe stamped steel plate that the TC bolts to and is has the teeth around the outer diameter for the starter to engage to.
