Questions for Aux fuel tank owners

When I have weight in the truck, the overload springs squeak at the point of contact with the stops. Does anybody else get this. I know for sure that this is the location as I have squirted some water on these points and whola no squeak! Any solution to this squeak ? thanks

Drives me crazy too!

My 5th wheel pin weight is about 2500#. This causes the overloads and 5th hitch to squeak like hell!

I'm going to try silicone spray for the heck of it. Looking forward to some surefire cures. . :)

Hey, guys, I fought this with my 1996 3500 only to find out that there's a tech service bulletin on this problem. Look here.

Thanks Rusty,

I came across the same TB last night and will be checking my springs this morning. The only thing I see is that mine only do it with a load on and think that it is comming from the overload contact points as water at these points silence the noise. Cheers

Tardog,

Yep, my 1996 3500 only made the noise when we were pulling the 5ver. Never made a squeak unloaded. I lubed the 5ver hitch, the 5ver's suspension, etc. and never thought it was the rear springs of the truck until I found out about this bulletin.

Checked the truck, all shims and clips are in place. Off the find some rubber safe lubricant (makes me think of my high school days):D

Hey guys,

There's an easy fix to stop the springs from squeaking on the frame stops.

Go to a plumbing supply store(Home Depot has 'em) and get 4 plumbers connectors. I forget what size, but I think it is 3"diameter x3" or 4" long. The connectors are grey plastic, have stainless steel hose clamps on each end, and fit over the frame stops. Tighten 'em down and you fixed for about $20. The set on the '97 lasted the 70+K miles I had it and were still good when I traded it in.

I was told about that "fix" by a Chrysler service rep. after I complained about the squeaking on my '97 3500 at the TDR Nationals in Mesquite, NV and it has worked on my '97 and my '00 trucks.

There's also a letter in a TDR Magazine back in early 1998 about the same "fix".
