Squealing Front Brakes Driving Me to Drink!!

I have been having a problem with my front brakes squealing shortly after I installed them. I even used the anti-squeal grease. I spoke to the vendor who offers several suggestions. I have not been able to do them yet because of time and weather. They will continue to squeal momentarily even after I release the brake pedal. Recently, I noticed they will slightly squeal as I turn the wheel with no pedal applied. This only will have after I have just used them. It's as if the pads are slightly making contact with the rotor from turning. This will stop after a couple turns??? I believe that a very slight amount of drag is normal... . I hope. Any ideas on if this sounds like I have bad calipers or what??:{ :{
 
What is anti squeal grease ???? There is anti squeal rubber stuff you put on the steel back of the pads. Syn. grease for the slide pins and that should be it.



I had my front pads replaced in enuxxxxw, wa. When they installed they greased the stainless springs on the caliper mount where the pads ride. Well they squealed from day one and would pull when in city traffic, rotors hot. When I got home about 10kmi later, I took my ir thermometer and the left rotor was 600* cooler than the right. I went to Auto Zone and picked up a set of carbon metalic's and a couple cans of brake clean. Pulled left front wheel and found a gob of grease had fallen from the pads springs on to the lining and rotor, both sides. had to pull both caliper assy's to clean the grease off. Washed the parts used synt. brake lube in pins, put anti squeal on the backs of the new pads, there was none on the "old ones". broke the glaze on the rotors < had not been done in WA. >, put every thing together. NO squeal, no pull and the rotors stay the same temp.



The hp pads don't camo the front wheels the next day after washing truck.

The squeal is actually a high frequency chattering of the pads on the calipers. There is a product called Brake Quiet which is nothing more than a spray on adhesive you apply to the BACK that is the non-braking side of the pads to adhere them to the caliper. It is not a real stromg adhesive so there is no problem removing the pads when it is time. Hope that helps. PS if you do it yourself and are not familiar with what you are doing just do one side at a time so that you can look at the other side to be sure you got things right.
 
Squeeling fix

This is what usually fixed squeeling brake pads when I turned wrenches for a living:



First the squeel is as stated above a high frequency vibration. To stop the vibration, you need to 'glue' the brake pad to the caliper and caliper piston.



I would remove the pads, lay them on a sheet of medium sandpaper on a flat surface, and sand them until they are deglazed.



Then, using High temperature silicone gasket sealer, apply a dab on the back of the pad where the pad touched the caliper, and a ring on the piston, and the pad where the piston touches the pad [you should be able to see this easily with used pads].



Disassemble and reassemble the pads and caliper one side at a time, because you want to apply the brakes as soon as you have reassembled one side. This squeezes out the extra glue, and assures good contact. Then repeat on the opposite side.



Usually this works, as long as the discs aren't too glazed and or thin. The glue makes the pad part of the caliper, and it can't vibrate at the high frequency we hear as the squeel.

The pads are Carbon Metallic. They stop the truck better than any other pad I have installed but, I hate the squeal!! When I received the pads, there was a small tube of a dark grey graphite looking grease. I was told by fellow members that it is to be used on the pad backing for anti-squeal. :rolleyes: I have since learned that it was really for the slide rails. Although the vendor also said that I could use it on the pad backs. They also came with a silcone based lube which was used for the caliper pins. I will have to remove the pads and apply the tacky type anti-squeal stuff.



What kind of mileage are you all getting out of the Carbon Metallic Pads? I think these pads are wearing fast!:confused:
 
I am running the Performance Friction Carbon Metallic on my truck and have gotten nearly 50K out of them at this point, but they are nearly gone. The factory pads got about 40K before they were shot. I have not had one bit of squeal, chatter or any of that garbage with the PFCM's. They are not glued to the caliper and they are not siliconed on the back, they are just stuck in the caliper dry. The pads that have the serious squealing problems are almost always the very aggressive pads, they are hard and last a long time but I would be surprised if your rotors are not eaten up when these pads are gone. The only way to get rid of the squeal is to toss the pads or to glue them on as Greg mentioned.
 
The poor quality service work I've been getting on my truck is driving me to drink too. 18 years without a drink and now I am ready. Maybe we should just have a party.
