I've got some ten year old pecan trees that I planted just coming into production and the sqirrels are tearin em up. They strip the bark and prune the ends of branches(pecans) I can't pop em because a school is across the street. Do the wire traps work?(Havahart). Anybody have plans for a wooden trap?Whats the best bait?Any bait that might give em a belly ache:-laf :-laf :-laf

How about a big sheet of that stuff they use to trap mice. The sticky gooy stuff. Wrap the sheet around the tree trucks and watch the squirrels get stuck. Like flys on fly paper.

CO2 powered pellet guns work great. Besides, you can always skin the tree rats after you shoot them and put them in the freezer until gumbo season.

You can buy the stick-um like flypaper in in qts and gallons to put on the trunk. They won't get stuck but if they step in it it will bother them so bad trying to get it off their feet that they will never come back. Be careful, the stick-um can girdle some types of trees, best wrap burlap, paper or aluminum foil on the trunk and apply the stick-um to it. There is also Squirrel Go-Way Fox Urine

The live traps do work, but not as good as a 22 cal rifle or a good pellet gun. Bait the area around the live trap with a few pecans, with some of them cracked. Then put a mixture of whole and cracked ones in the live trap. They get wise fast, so you might need to change the area after the first two, and then maybe resort to shooting them in the end. Make sure you remove the trapped squirrel asap because the others will watch the screaming and try to avoid the trap like the plague. Pellet guns work the best though. Squirrel gumbo, oooo ahhhhh, gooood.

Don't ya have a dog... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... my dog useta (God rest her soul) love squirrels. :-laf Didn't have much of a squirrel problem when she was around, or a rabbit problem or a cat problem or a stray dog problem, or a people problem. :rolleyes: Yea, she was a good dog.

I do have a German Shorthair pointer

He just aint quick enough or maybe he got bit by one. Drives him nutts. They run down the top of a wooden fence. When he jumps at em they hop down to the stringer on the outside the fence and move right along. He has taken out about a halfdozen rabbits and about 2 dozen possums though. He eats most of the rabbits. The possums are just for fun I guess, he just kills em. He aint stuppid. ;)

Squirrels love peanut butter. If you decide the trap method, use it for great results. When I was a kid and me and my buddy couldn't afford conibear traps, we used to buy rat traps and drive a few finishing nails through the perimeter, worked like a champ to catch those rodents and the cost is minimal. You could always make a few of those and place them in the trees. Of course, there's no need for catch and release, they'll be goners. If that's not your style, a havahart trap will also work, use the same bait.

Get couple conibear traps

Those things are wicked:eek: We had a bunch of cats around the farm a couple years ago (damn things multiply faster than I can shoot em) Had a guy come in with conibear traps and he put them in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and then dumped a little cat food in the bucket. Those cats never knew what hit em snapped thier necks like toothpicks:D Be real careful setting them though, if one gets your fingures It's almost impossilbe to get them off by your self. :{

Here are some www.rpoutdoors.com

Just remember to be careful. ;)

I think they might be overkill fer squirrels :eek: , but yer run-of-the-mill 110 should do the trick.

LOL !!!! 330's would definetly be overkill, unless you have some biga$$ squirrels :eek: . 110's work quite nicely, though you may get a neighbors cat or two in the mix :--) .

Do ya want 16d's or are they really BIG critters, you may need the 20d's, or heck may as well do it right, go-fer-the ring-shanked pole-barn nail, they gotta be 6" long, and with the ring-shank, they won't slide off and getaway. :eek:

Well, when I was a youngster and me and my buddy looked at ourselves as the last of the true mountain men, we trapped squirrels ( we ate them and sold their tails to the fly ty r's) . Once we had enough $$$ in the kitty for the conibear traps, we bought 2 110's. Baited them with PB and set them, way back in the woods. Went back the next day and found we got one squirrel and one cat :eek: :eek: . That was the last time we used the conibears for squirrels, couldn't find anyone to buy the cat :D and we didn't have Chinese resturaunts around back then either :D :D .

Actually, we fely pretty bad about catching the cat unintentionally. We a took a blood oath, in true mountain man style and swore each other to secrecy. Guess that cats out of the bag now though ( pun intended ) .

If anyone from PETA is reading the above is all a big lie and I love cats, they taste just like chicken ( oooopssss) .
