Where Can I Get Some Coal?

Refueling video.


Pretty stable refueling there; smooth...not much turbulence at all. At about 5:15 the SR lit one AB. A little wobbling noticed. Video flickered, then noticed there was a disconnect. Looks like the SR decided to adjust the rudder trim for stability, then a reconnect to continued the refueling. You can see the vertical stab with a bit of right rudder trim for the remainder of the fueling. Miss hitchin' fun rides on aircraft.

Triethylborane (TEB) This liquid was use for JP-7 because fuel has very low volatility and is difficult to ignite, injection to start the J-58 and light the afterburner.
There is a counter near the throttles since only have 16 shots. On a long mission have to keep eye on this counter because each time come out of afterburner to refuel and sometimes during refueling had to put one engine in first stage afterburner to stay connected to the tanker, to fill up completely to continue the mission. When filling tank (Teb) had to be real careful if connection or hose leak TEB would ignite! When injected into the engine during start-up would be bright green glow.

Funny TEB brought up... had this article thst brought up fireballs shooting out of SR71 at an airshow at Mildenhal.

The problem could have been resolve if the KC-135Q had JT-3 fan engines would have been a big improvement since that is why Blackbird's have such hard time staying connected, specially hit turbans bounce became unhooked then fuel all over the aircraft doing good wash job; then reconnect continue refueling. That's just my take.:confused::(:rolleyes:
The KC-135E used the JT-3 series; and the EC/RC/OC/WC-135's, B-52H plus a few other acft. They had more thrust (and were quieter) than the J-57 and didn't require water injection for heavy loads.

I remember one refueling real well slide into pocket below tanker, tanker folks then put the boom in heavy cold rain was north of Arctic circle was raining with lightning, next # 1 shut down, just what I needed. At night mind you i disconnected back way off two or so miles did some trouble shooting decided, noise over and headed down. Now went through the restart producer finally got restarted and over temperature 890 Centigrade I had dropped to 25k back to the tanker I went so could get the fuel i needed to completed the mission;

Life would be so…(yawn) ho-hum...without having a little excitement every now and then. Gotta make use of all those checklists and training sessions, and a little boost from the guy upstairs helps too... ;):D

Went to my parent’s place today. My dear sweet mom still has most of my old room they way it was. They use it as a spare bedroom but have kept most of my G rated wall art up. Thought I’d share this photo...those posters have been hanging there since the late 1980s...

:D To the best of my knowledge Boeing never made a diesel. The BD came from the McDonnell Douglas F4 Phantom which was equipped with J79's that pumped out a lot of smoke leaving a perfect signature for Gomer. One of the best platforms for the era and had a number of nicknames eg; Sled...Rhino..A**Gas. Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas and there you have it.:cool:

My retired Boeing friends say "McDonnell Douglas brought Boeing with Boeing's money" and then ruined it as a company.

Did the Navy have RF-4's or was that just a AF thing. The RF-4's used the Loran C Navigation system we installed in SE Asia in 1966.
 
Snoking, I don't recall any mention of that...but I suppose it's possible. Also, please keep in mind that was over 50 years ago:D

Good point. Now that you have presented the word archaic, I may have to re-evaluate and return to a base 10 numbering system. Less organic calculating required then, too.
Love them grandkids. :D So sweet and innocent. Then they grow up and get close to or bigger than you and still are sweet...;)
My philosophy is: You can think you're getting old at 99. Once you turn 100, you are officially old and have well-earned the status.
 
When I was on Okinawa with Agency made some arraignment with USAF and they lone out some RF-4c's for secret SAM project those J 79 were some smokey engines get into afterburners RF 4 would move right along about 15 minutes you better be looking for fuel very quickly. Since RF is much lighter with only two camera's in the configuration for the secret sam project, all markings on the aircraft were remove top side was painted black, bottom was painted blue and kept in our hanger. Those aircraft flew at night, I was on a mission in the northern arctic circle my aircraft didn't like cold weather that was bad news as once again land in Alaska.:(
