I don't know who is doing your welding or to what process (GTAW, FCAW, GMAW, etc) but maybe you could elaborate on this statement. A talented welder with proper weld prep should not yield a weaker area. Did your last one break across the weld or just beyond the weld in the base material?

not trying to be a jerk, just wanting to help!

Jason

Oo.

My last two prototypes broke just beyond the weld. Like right were the weld connects the lower factory shaft to the aluminum hurst shifter.

We filled in the bold holes that are in the hurst shifter but that did not help, I admit that I know NOTHING about welding, so I have no idea what type he used (mig, tig, etc)

I know the adapter I want to be made of chromoly and one solid piece just machined down to size...

Anyway, back to work, blahhh..... :{

Hey like ive said before and I'll say it again since your having major problems getting the bent shifter from dodge. Just buy the regular un-bent shifter direct from Hurst. I'd bet more than half of us really dont give a hoot if it has a bend in it or not, since Ive never seen a "I hate the stock shifter location" Thread. It sounds like it would save you and BD alot of $$$$ just to buy the regular Hurst shifter, and it will also allow us to get out hands on a SRT shifter now instead of later. I do realize some would like the shifter closer so offer that as an option but I guess they will have to wait, but hook us up now with the straight shifter and make some $$$

Also see if you can make a non short shifter version for us who dont want to spend over $400 on a shifter.

I actually collected answers about straight or bent, and 9 out of 10 want the shifter about 6cm closer to the driver. Since this what I first thought of, I want to make this model perfect. One problem is HURST does not make a straight shifter in the finish of the SRT-10 shifter - They only make it chrome.

Lee ("Not_Agn") actually tested a straight one, BUT broke it racing. So it was back to the drawing board. I want to make this a bolt in KIT, so thats why I wotking with BD,etc and not just welding some mild steel to the shifter and calling it done.

Here is the straight one I did before Lee broke it - :p

Great news,

I am for sure making progress. Hear a few pics to get the idea across.

BTW - ever seen $645 worth of RAM SRT-10 shifter parts?

The kit will not be be near that, But the lower pivot shaft I had to buy for the R&D was $445

Tomeygun,

Just to make sure I understand, is the whole purpose of this mod to make the knob 6cm closer to the driver and be able to use the SRT shift knob? Does the pattern on the knob match up with what we have?

The advantage of much improved looks is obvious, but I was just curious about the other benefits.

How is the knob attached? Does it thread on? What size are the threads?

Correct, the purpose started because I just wanted that shiny shifter in my truck, Well due to the top of the shifter is bend, I had to match the bend at the bottom (or a portion of it) - Thus is why the ball moved closer to me as a result. Ended up I loved it like that, felt way better when racing, etc.

Then had a few others try it and people seemed to like it.

ANd the leather ball is way nicer to feel then that cheap plastic stock one.

The pattern does match up with the NV5600 users. Sadly thats the only transmission it will match with. I will most likely off a mopar viper ball (P5153300) too - No pattern on it. (see below)

The ball does thread on, and I have no idea what the thread type is... But it may have to be indexed to look right.

On the other hand the straight hurst shifter will have no benefit other than to look pretty... Then again I have bought a few truck part that only do that, So I guess thats ok ;)

3/8"-18 national course i believe is the thread on the srt-10 shift ball... for those that just want the ball, and want it on your stock shifter, simply chase the 3/8" threads with a M10x1. 5 tap and it will work...

just wanted to update you guys that this is not dead, I am just stress testing the adapter now. and I plan to have a few already chosen few test the beta units when I am finished with my alpha unit

BTW - I will post a pic tonight, The 2nd prototype looks alot neater and not a simple hackjob like the last one that was to test durability...

This current part is about 2 stages off production I would estimate. One more revision to perfect angle and center offset, and one more revision to ease install procedure.

I will be happy to make an official run of this part, because this one-off part making labor is NOT CHEAP!! like 3 hours at $80/hr to set CNC machine and make the prototype... . (I need a machine shop in my garage)

BTW - I would like opinions about what amount of offset from center everyone thinks would be good? THanks!!

The Tomey I have been the guy who always wants it in the stock location but the majority spoke and said they want it closer. I was looking at the pic from the SRT-10 and it looks very close... . almost clostrophibic. Why dont we meet half way between stock and srt-10??????

A srt-10 hurst shifter that has no offset from center will be a pretty simple adapter to make. I will make a prototype after the offset model is done...

PS - I took the 2nd revision home to put it on my truck, The Stupid machine shop made the thread tap one size too small... . I mean come'on, why cant people just do thier JOB!?!?!

Now I have to wait till monday, drop it off, get it back tuesday, I tell ya, the old saying "if you want something done right... ... "

Anyway, till then... ... ... ... ...

they just don't care... at work we had an outside contractor come in to do some repairs to one of our ge diesel engines. they aligned and bored out a damaged cam bore +0. 500" and our lathe was down, so we sent out the repair sleive to a local machine shop to be machined down to be a press fit. . first one they screw up [way too loose] the second one they screw up too [still too loose] so these sub's had to drive back down to buffalo [from toronto] and get a new repair piece as they only had 2 with them and while down there, they cut it down themselves on their lathe and next day they did the install. . very nice tight press fit...

BTW - Just stopped by on lunch and had them fixed the thread size...

The guy had to walk to my truck and measure the shaft because he did not think it could be metric. He thought it was . 543 dia, it was really . 551

His responce was "Well I thought that would close enough" ---- UHHH... not really idiot, its metric BTW!!

geesh, I love some people

Friend of mine with an srt-10 changed his shifter to a pistol grip last year at the Nats. It looks like it should have come factory this way. He got his setup from Gunslinger. I think there are a couple of companys selling pistol grip shifters now. Not meaning to start anything, just adding more info. Randy

Now thats something I can see, Cause the shifter is not very long... (in an SRT-10)

I intend to make a version with a pistol grip shifter though, Just it will be offset to the side a bit, like the SRT-10 shifter will be in my truck...

I'm not the tallest, ya know? 5th is quite a reach ;)
