I regularly haul 3 to 4 yards of gravel, stone dust, etc. in addition to my steel dump body and hoist. This probably equates to a huge load in a regular pick up bed. Based on my experiences with my 05 I would run the Energy Suspension bumpstops with airbags or a heavier main leafpack. I would NOT run them with an otherwise stock suspension, loaded or empty.
With my bags aired down, and the truck empty, the helpers basically ride on the taller bumpstops. This causes a very rough ride, since the helpers are engaged all the time. With a heavy load, they basically compress to the lower height of the stock bumpstops.
The taller bumpstops do an excellent job restoring the stock feel to a truck with air bags or a heavier main pack, because they engage the helpers in a progressive manner, instead of basically having the helpers slap against the stock stops. This is especially helpful with airbags, since they bottom out at about the same time that the helpers engage with the stock stops, causing a very rough and undersprung ride.
The suspension under my 01 HO without the camper package (helper springs) handled heavier loads (occasionally 53k trailer weight plus truck) better than the slightly modded suspension on my 05 3500.
I still love hauling with the stock engine in my 05 b/c it pulls (normal weights - 15k and under) much better that the 01 with an EZ. The suspension just needs some more work. Even though I'm complaining, my 1 ton handles heavier loads much better than most of the chevy 1 tons and ford 350s-450s I see in the gravel pit.
Hope this helps someone.
