Help with tires, what do these numbers mean

I am debating on having stacks installed friday. Would you mind posting your pro's and con's of having them.

1. I have 4" straight pipe now. Will there be any difference going to stacks sound wise?

2. Soot problems? What can I expect? I live in Michigan so there is alot of rain, dew and snow. I really dont care to go put coffie cans on my truck every night.

3. Straight cut, Miter cut, or angle? And why?

4. 5'" or 6" and why? I am leaning towards the 5"

Thank you for any input as I need to make a decision by this evening.

I had a 6" single stack that droned no matter what you did to it. I do have a reg. cab I hear quad cabs arent as bad. Truck wouldnt fit in the garage with it on blew black soot all over the side of truck.

Pros: looks bad *** That was about it.

I'm running 5" turnouts and love 'em! The only thing I don't care for is the soot. Fortunately, my trucks already black, otherwise the bedsides would be pretty ugly. Just make sure you close the doors BEFORE you fire it up! I'm speaking from personal experience. Let's just say the interior needed some desooting done to it. #@$%!

I had 7"

I had 7" mitre cut stacks on my truck for about two months, the tops were about 2 to 4" above the top of the cab. They were awesome sounding for the first month. After a while I started to get headaches every day from driving. But this was due to having 5" straight pipe also. I may put them back on someday but until then they will sit in my shed.

I have been running my 5" turnouts for around 4 years now and really like them. I have had very little problems with soot. My original setup was the stock 3" pipe into the 5" stacks and it seemed to have more of a raspier bark to it, just didn't sound real smooth but was not bad sounding by any means. Now I am running 5" all the way from the twins back and the sound is so much more mellow, it sounds just like a big rig! I have towed sleds out west for 15 hours straight with people in the back seat and they have never complained about it being too noisy.

I have 4" turnouts above the cab ... . can still get into a normal sized garage with 35" tires on. Not much drone at all unless I'm running around 2200 RPM, even then it's not bad. Soot has never been a problem for me at all even WITH rain. Of course, my truck is black and that helps a LOT from what I'm told.

Yeah, I know 4" is too small for some of y'all, but c'mon they were FREE!

no one has brought up the sooty mess that shoots out every time you start the truck with condensation in the system. I had a single miter cut 5" and the mess was all over everything I owned. It would get on the truck depending on which way the wind was blowing when I started it. It would shoot all over the front of my camper or dirt bikes if I started up and took off in the evening (dew) or in the morning (dew again).

I took it off and am still cleaning black off of everything.

my 97 was a white single cab... when I got it it was 4" into 5" tip-out stacks, and they would soot the truck like no other

then I went to HX40, 4" DP into 5" miter cuts. for whatever reason, I never really had bad soot problems w/ that setup some flakes now and then if I parked the truck in the drizzle and then went and fired it up before it cooled...

third setup I had was 3x6" crossover box w/ 5" turnouts... very minimal soot issues...

I have never put buckets or anything over my stacks... too much of a pain.

it has been my experience that if you use a short run of flex pipe between the downpipe and the rest of the exhaust, it will allow water to weep out of the system without causing a mentionable exhaust leak... also, if it has been raining, don't apply any throttle when starting, and go easy on the throttle at first to allow the heat in the exhaust pipe to evaporate the water... once you're up to temp and have some road speed, you can wail on it, and it'll just blow out the soot flakes, and you probably won't hardly see anything on your truck.

again, I had a WHITE Truck, so soot showed up big time!

my box crossover setup resonated the least, but all three setups were a headache on long drives. cruising around town, nothing beat the stacks. this was in a single cab with TONS of sound deadening. Quad cabs aren't as bad, but without some sound deadener, you'll probably grow to hate them on a long trip.

twin turbos act as another muffler and aren't as loud through the exhaust

Running dual 5" miters--have been for couple of years. First thing I notices was a GREAT drop in EGT!!! Then, every now and again somebuddy will drop a few beer cans in there. They blow right out... :p

Leave weepage holes to minimize the sootation.

Mine are a tad loud when hauling heavy, so I'll install a short resonator in there sometime when I get around to it. One can also stuff rolled wire into the stack(s) for a bit of sound muffing... probably be a dirty job. ;)

No drone. Have driven 400 miles to FL and back no problem.

I say do it. Turnouts or Haulers probably don't get as much water in them.

My wife's truck will be stacked eventually. She has ALREADY approved it. Hers will have resonator and drain holes and may turn out... we'll see.

For a look at my setup ... check my gallery. They are 6" miter cuts with no muffler but I guess it helps with twin turbos to but the sound. Anywa to answer your question. . soot can be a problem.

The worst issue that I had with soot is right after I give the truck a bath. I hooked to our trailer and within 3 blocks the front of the trailer was covered in black spots. .

Is the soot bad enough that I will take them off... heck no. . once I get the extra $$$$ I want a set of 7" miter cuts. I love the sound of my stacks...

Once you've been stacked most of us wont go back :-laf :-laf :-laf

i have to agree with rharvey. ive had 2 dodges and both have stacks. i like them. soot is not to bad. the kit tdr member lsfarm sells are self draining. i had that kit on my first dodge. i never had any problems with soot.

RHARVEY and the others; I must be a clean freak of something. The first time I showered my $27K camper with soot I knew then the stack's days were numbered. it did sound awesome though with the twins :D

Lethal, A question to YOU is do you haveany toys like a boat , camper , show car etch that you like to keep clean? Unless you FAITHFULLY put stack hats on them to keep the rain and snow out you will have a filthy mess to clean every time you hit the key. 6" miter cuts juuuust above the cab look absolutly awesome in my book.

Well I went for it and put the silverline stainless steel 5" base on with 6" Grand Rock Miters. I also have the 5"stainless miters for winter time. Took about a 600 miles road trip one way with them after they were put on and WOW. Im likin it!

Well I did a single 5" stack through the bed with 5" turbo back exhaust and its is nice . . I made mine so I can swap a Tractor trailer stack muffler with the shield on it to be quiet and not burn cargo in the bed. . I made bracket that I welded to the the muffler and bolts to the bed corner so two bolts and a band clamp under the bed and viola swap from 5" chrome turn out to a 5" Tractor trailer muffler stack with heatshield. I did remove the baffles out of the muffler stack too so its like a 4" resonator now. let me see if I can post pics.

I can't seem to see find the chrome stack pics though any how this is the muffler stack setup. . I like it, I can drive with cardboard right against the heatshield for hours and no fire and no burns. The straight chrome stack sounds way cooler but it does get on my nerves driving for a long time ear plugs help the stack muffler is quiet though. I snow plow and many people think its the town plow truck pulling up when i come by . . hahah I am making a dumping flat bed for the truck soon so I will keep the same stacks though it will look better I will have a corner notched out of the flat bed to clear the stack and I will need to make stack support too. .

later

I covered the front of our trailer trailer with black spots due to the fact that I had washed the truck on Friday night and left for the coast Saturday morning... When I say I covered it... believe me I covered it... People asking me where did I hit all that oil. . Anyway I learned from that but my stacks are here to stay. .

What keeps you from fitting 6" miters? Don't they have 6"-5" adapters?

Yes they do. Thats what I put on was grandrock 6"miters with a 5"base.

Does anyone make a nylon sock/cap or anything or should I just bust out the folgers?
