i think the legalities you'll run into are the noise and smoke if you're fueling good. I haven't seen it in print, but i have heard that the turbo is considered a "muffling device", meaning that you still technically have a muffler in the exhaust system. more likely you'll debate the noise side of it.

The turbo is not a muffler. You must run a muffler somewhere in the system. (or keep your foot out at the right times and who will ever know).

Stacks are legal, but the tips can not point to the side at all under 11 feet. So they must be straight up or straight back or over 11 feet high.

Not in my state. And when I did live in CA, a turbo IS considered a muffler. This was some time ago. So, the laws may have changed.

Wasn't there a thread a while ago about someone, back east?, getting cited for not having a heatguard on the stacks to protect from heat. there was a lot of debate :-{} about the legalities, and positions that they had to reach into your PH bed, over the side rails etc. , but as with anything subject to what the officer writing the ticket decided :( and then you could go to court and see how it played out

I was only answering for CA since that was the question.

C. V. C. 27150 was last changed in 1977. Maybe a turbo passed as a muffler before then.

C. V. C. 27150 specifically states "muffler" several times in the section.

Regardless if you want to try and talk the Officer into the turbo/muffler deal, C. V. C. 27152 states that you may not modify the exhaust in any way which will allow it to be louder than factory, or in any way to violate section 27150,(i. e. remove the muffler).

Again, diesel p/u's are not at the top of most Officer's sound list w/ all the straight pipe bikes and compact cars w/ 5-6" megaphone tips.

However stacks w/o a muffler will draw much more attention than a dull 4" pipe sticking out in the stock location w/o a muffler, no matter which one is louder. ;)

in TX it says "muffler" too... but it goes on to define muffler... which includes the words "rotary device" (IE turbo)

I know the big trucks in california don't run straight stacks :(

I have not had problems in NorCal either. Been by many lawmen with there windows down, Just don't get on it to hard around them. I passed a CHP the other day and he was on my right side with his window open alittle and nothing. I have 4:10 so it was up on the rpms, but @2200 or less it's not bad, over that gets a little loud. But sounds good to me. :)
