Has anybody puts stacks through a fiberglass cap. I have been told its a 'bad idea'. I have not come up with a way to get them through with a high assurance that it will be water tight and not melt/damage the fiberglass.

Any Ideas ???

might work this way

If you put a pipe within a pipe it may work out... sealing concerns and all.

The outer pipe would be open at the top and bottom. Sealed to the truck top and bottom. . walla no rain inside. It also acts as a heat shield. The smoke pipe goes through the center of the outer pipe. Air insulates.

This type construction is used in B-vent gas piping in industrial and residential furnaces.

Another as of yet untested idea.

Dennis, I've considered installing 4" stacks outside the bed, directly behind the cab on my 3500. If you look, you'll see holes in the bed reinforcement ribs a few inches in from each side. That would be a good place to attach braces for the stacks. My thoughts are to split behind the downpipe with a Y fitting then 90 to each side.

Taking a hint from the big trucks, I'd use stainless flex to connect to the 4" stacks. The stacks I've considered are the ones with turnouts so as to avoid collecting water when stationary in the rain.

If you keep everything in tight, I don't think they would be extend past the dually fenders.

The main reason I haven't tackled this project is the full DZEE running boards I've got. Would have to cut for the stacks and if they didn't work out, that'd be another fine mess.

To really dress things up, a set of chrome guards like the Little Red Wagon trucks from about "78" used would be great. A dually Big Red Wagon, I can see it now, wood strips in the bed with chrome strips, the old style tailgate,... ... ... . well someday.

I've been testing the the heat of the stacks. During a good pull 28,000lb+ GCVW my stacks at the base hit 345 deg.

You could maybe contain the heat as earlier posts suggested. Maybe put flex over the pipe up to the exit point.

MoparGuy, They make COOL rain caps for the Strait stacks with Mitred cut.

I have been researching and Testing stack setups. Please "E" me if you want more info.

Thanks to some input from Steve St. Laurent it seems possible to run two outer pieces of pipe from bed through the cap. Then run the actual exaust as an inner pipe. Then any water that go in would basically drain out the bottom through the bed.

A concern on how to keep the heat down in the cap. Insulation is an option but during a long run will not be the solution as it will eventually pass most of the heat.

So my high-tech, low-brain solution would be to mount a high volume low pressure fan that would blow cool air between the two pipes. With enough flow that should keep the temperature down. I will have to consider how to switch it on and off, ie with ignition or otherwise,.

Well, the planning continues, there must be a good solution.
