I tried three different mufflers with my stacks... a dynomax bullet on the downpipe... an 8" long resonator after the crossmember... and a 20" long magnaflow...

the interior resonance was WORSE with all of them... the bullet and resonator weren't that much worse, but the magnaflow was HORRIBLE...

that aeroturbine might help though.

I love the look of stacks and believe that loud pipes save lives. The only worry is if it gets to be too much to for me to handle, or even worse, to much for girls to put up with. :( I would like to get stacks on this summer. Does anyone have any good pics of installation of stacks with the y and elbows under the bed? When running the pipe under the bed, how is it fit/worked around the fuel tank? I assume that stacks are commonly put right in the corners of the bed and not closer in to the center? How high from the bed to the tip of the stack? Anyone run stacks bigger than 5 inch? Thanks.

Jordan

Check out Rob Thomas's stack pics. PM him as I believe he used to sell the kits. Under the bed and in the corners would be the only way I would consider it, but I don't think the lil' woman would go for more noise  . I'm saving up for a 5" kit out the back, but dreaming about stacks. :D

you can't run a Y pipe and elbows under the bed... not 5" anyway. it's hard enough running it in the bed.

as for the girls? the stacks didn't bother my girlfriend at all... even on a 5hr road trip. I was ready to gouge my ear drums out with ice picks.

forrest, try some real diesel resonators or mufflers. . stay away from the gas power mufflers as the packing will clog with soot and render it useless. NELSON, which is a division of cummins and fleetguard has a wide assortment of resonators and mufflers made for light and med duty trucks. ive found a resonator im going to try on my setup, just to take the edge off of it.

i really dont have a drone problem, but it can get on your nerves if your not in the mood or after 1 hr. i dont want to strangle the exhaust down too much. seeing how im at a full 4" w/ 5" stacks.

all of my resonators and mufflers were diesel specific.

dyno max bullet muffler is a gas muffler with fiberpacking in it... diesel mufflers should have packing in them.

FWIW, all a dynomax bullet does is kill all the turbo whistle in the exhaust... does basicly nothing to the exhaust note.

the diesel muffler and resonator I tried both sounded good, but the interior resonance was worse with both :(

Forrest

agree to disagree... im not going to start a war over a dynomax muffler... just saying bad news if it had packing in it. #1 it clogs with soot and then doesnt work #2 becomes a fire hazard.

i read that somewhere and i cant seem to find it... u wont find a medium duty diesel muffler with packing in it. and if u do, its a gas muffler on a diesel system. look at the big diesel mufflers, just chambers. and short sections of pipe.

you're correct...

but I ran one for ~10k miles... heavily fueled... sounded the same as the day i installed it.

MRBP's mufflers are all packed. (not that I would run one!)

I would like to throw this tid bit in if I may. I have found that the height of the stacks themselfs play a big part on the in-cab noise level. I had mine chopped at the roof line of the cab and they like to have driven me absolutely nuts, but then I swapped them about for a set that are about 1' above the cab and made a world of difference I make lots of trips that are several hours long and they don't wear on me nearly as much. Don't get me wrong they are still loud just not deafening.

Do you have any pics of the stacks that are/were 1 foot above the cab. Want to see if they would look right on mine without being too tall.

Jordan

I have a set of 5" turn outs with the 6x3 cross box pipe... mine is not bad unless I get over 2k rpms, past 2k rpms it drones pretty good, but hi-way crusing is perfect, as with 3:55 gears and 35" tires, I am at about 16-1700 at 75mph. I almost cant even hear them. The bottom part of the turn out is just above the top of the cab, puting them about 6" over at the top of the turn out.

Mine above the cab. They are 8 1/2' from tip, to the grond. Stacks themselves are 4' tall.

I pick mine up on saturday 5" from turbo to crossover box which is 6" and stacks are 5" mitre cut I have an aeroturbine to slip in the mix I will post results I hope to have it done by end of next week we'll see been pretty busy lately

I am plannning on buying stacks real soon. I have a JMI flatbed with underbed boxes and want to run 5" bullhorns up the front of the flatbed next to the cab. any help would be greatly appriciated!

PS - Stacks rock!!

aseigworth: that's a good idea do you have any side shots ? can you see the exhaust under the truck since its lower then the frame ?

Way back when... . when I owned (yes, I'll admit it, but I'm not proud of it) a Ford with the non-turboed 6. 9 in it, I put stacks on it. I basically did the square tube in the box, but the muffler was a bit more difficult.

After trying a number of different mufflers, both purchased and homebuilt, I settled on building a very simple one that had an amazingly great sound. I don't know what it would sound like on a turbocharged engine, but it sounded great on the 6. 9, taking the volume down, but still keeping a nice deep rumble. I used an old compressed air tank off of a junked semi tractor to create the shell, which had enough meat to it that I drove the truck with that muffler on it for over ten years, and that was in the salt up here in Minnesota. It was easy to build, and very free flowing. Here are some simple pics to give you an idea of how simple it was.

The muffler itself was about 15 inches long, and the internal ends of the pipes were spaced away from the end of the shell by an amount equal to the diameter of the pipe. I suspect that a longer shell length would have been a tad bit quieter but with a deeper tone. Most of the time it sounded pretty nice, but if you stood on it it would bellar pretty nice. Best part was downshifting going downhill, with the revs around 2400 or so, it would get a nice backrap that sounded just like a jake in the big rigs. :D
