looking for a set of twins but ?????

Ranch 9000 shocks.

I was unsure about stacks until I went to Muncie. Can some of you guys please let me know what kind of noise they make in the cab? Especially those with quad cabs. I'm curious how loud they are. I have 4" straight (Rip Rooks) exhaust now, and it is just right inside the cab.

Thanks,

Robin

Much louder in the cab. I ran a straight pipe out the back for 3 years and then dual straight piped 5" turn out stacks for the last year. Its fine by me, but passengers in the back have a heck of a time hearing me talk or even the radio. Every now and then i put my little home made mufflers inside the stacks to quiet it down, especially for long trips. Kevin

Stacks Rule

I put stacks on in muncie fri am I put on Rob Thomas's set the noise in the cab is a little less then with the 4/5 straight pipe I had before the drone before was unbearable at 2200 rpm now it is a lot less, still there but way better with no muffler and I like the sound quality overall. I may have to put a small home made muffler on just to tame it a little when towing heavy but we will see. As with anything, stacks are not for everyone but I like mine. I had worryed about bed space for a long time before getting stacks now I don't care. If you don't have straight pipe now you will want a muffler with stacks if you could ride with someone with stacks to see for your self before taking a plunge that would be a good idea.

Just to add to the conversation.....

Those with stacks that have routed theres under the bed with the driverside pipe having to go OVER the fuel tank... Did this work?... Any melted plastic?

I did talk to lsfarm and he said it was not a good idea.

The other heat question is those with plumbing in the bed, does the cross pipe get real warm?

I have a full width in the bed steel fuel tank that I can either move back (install stacks in front), remodel the fuel tank and set it on top of the cross pipe (good for keep fuel from gelling... ya right) or running plumbing under the box and dealing with pipe over the stock plastic fuel tank.

I seen one heck of lot of stacks at Muncie and they all looked cool. I am sure what we are asking has been done over and over.

Thanks for any help!

Reference your pic, that is the height I want, but I will probably use curved ends. They look great on your truck.

Please, more stack users add your comments!!

I routed mine over the tank and used the sleeve out of a fire coat to protect the tank. Didnt work and melted the nut on top of the tank. I will replace the large nut then use a stainless steel saddle and some steam pipe insulation. It should work. I had some elbows welded to plates so I could bolt them to the bed instead of using brackets mounted on the bed rails like a lot do. I run a little hotter then most do though when racing. 1800 degrees

(ouch)

The trick to quiet stacks is a muffler.

Mine run over the tank. . nothing melted but I necked down to twin 3" pipes over the rails then 4" inner stacks with 5" chrome outers. It keeps the stacks only warm to the touch in the bed-- no bunt hands for the kiddies;):D

Whatever you do - don't use my current stack setup as a template. :-laf

Mine's loud as heck - but my 3" feed pipe is NOT connected to the 5" tip out stack. So, basically - the 5" stack is acting just like a huge resonance chamber.

Mine are very loud in the cab especially on a long trip with a load (see readers rigs for pics). I also did it differently than most. I like it but my passengers usually tell me otherwise.

For my stacks, I did it in the bed with 4 square steel tubing for the crossbar. I had a tonneau cover on the truck with the stacks and at one point, the cover was touching the stack for several months and there is no damage whatsoever to the vinyl cover, so I don't see too much of a heat prpblem from them.

What are you using to muffle your stacks? I like the striaght piped stacks most of the time but there are other times when it is just too much. I want to be able to have it both ways!

Just about everyone does the in bed stacks. What is the deal with the ones out side of the bed? Are those too much brain damage to install?

I think that I have only seen one set of pics here with the pipes on the outside, and I am leaning that way too.

jvanwaardhuizen,

I rolled chicken wire to form a 3" tube about 12" long. Then i wrap it with fiberglass pipe insulation until it fits really snug into the stack. works well but can blow out over time. I now use a homemade expansion clamp at the top to keep it in place. Now in 2 min I can change it from quiet to obnoxious.

I was hoping to get more replys, but, oh, well. . So far I am not getting stacks until I can find someone with them and get a ride. I still would like to know if they are quieter than my 4" no muffed exhaust. Thanks to those who replied!:)

Robin

Robin, in the cab my stacks are without question, a lot louder than my previous straight piped exhaust. I would try to ride with someone who has stacks if you have any doubt.

We put dual 4" stacks on my son's truck last weekend. They are loud but not obnoxious, unless you put the hammer down. I'm afraid he will get pulled over for making noise so I think I will put a resonator under the truck to take the harshness out of it. Other than that :D
