Greetings,

My recently purchased 98 3500cc 4x4 is suffering a few problems. Under certain conditions it stalls out when in drive or reverse just idling, as though as its perhaps loading up. It also is doing this on quick on/off throttle light puches under 5mph. When in park it idles fine with no problems. seems as though the stationary stall out when just sitting in drive comes and goes, sometimes fine other times not.

The reason I think maybe its loading up is because I am blowing alot of black smoke. Which is my next concern. Where should I go from here. The trucks in great shape overall, I hope my engine problems will be remedede.

Also forgot to mention--- the previous owner told me he had bigger injectors put in shortly after he bought the truck in 98- They had also changed (I think) the drivge for the mechanical fuel pump. Hopefully this helps

Sounds like your idle speed is a little low. If you have a 12v with P7100 pump it can be easily changed. (Me being a 24v owner the 12v guys will have to help on that).

Diesels do not "load up" in the sense of a gas engine that will load up and die from too rich of a fuel mixture, with no throttle plate to regulate air flow a diesel runs at whatever rate it is fed fuel. Your black smoke is the result of overfueling from the big injectors, the rate of injection is greater that the engines ability to draw in air for combustion so some particles are unburned resulting in soot (smoke). You should get the most smoke at low RPM under heavy load with the smoke decreasing to near nothing at high RPM low load situations. If you have lots of smoke all the time you may have a pump or injector problem.
