Crankcase oil capacity is 11 or 12 quarts on both. I say 11 or 12 because, IIRC, my '01's owner's manual called for 11 quarts but I generally put 12 in. With oil filter change also, of course.

Thanks,

The reason I ask is my owners manual says 10 plus one in the filter. The place I went for an oil change thought is was supposed to be 13, but I convinced them otherwise. He look on his computer and told me it said there actually were 4 engines for 2002 ( I think he misread something). But he said there is a vin 6, and vin 7 and a vin C. One of those (I forget which one) called for 13 quarts, which would have caused an overfill in my truck. With the 10 it came out perfectly.

After hearing the above, I think Ive figured out why Ive gotten an overfill a couple of time. s

Your quick oil change experience is why most of us would never take our Rams with Cummins engines to one of those places. They are the guys who will install a wrong filter, most often a non-brand name, perhaps made by Fram, put passenger car rated engine oil in, overfill or underfull, and leave the crankcase drain plug cross threaded or loose.

Functionally there isn't a difference in capacities, just mismarked dip sticks, misprinted information, and speedy oil changes. ;)

If the oil change place is dropping the oil and refilling immediately thats why you seeing a little over full. They never wait to drain all the oil and there is a quart or more left in the engine on a quick change.

I only did it twice. And I know the guy, and it was delo and a diesel filter. But, I did learn my lesson. However, I have had overfills a couple of times at a shop with a good reputation that specializes in diesels, and works on a lot of dodges. Thats why Im wondering about the vin6, vin7, and vinC that is in the repair shop computer (who has an outstanding reputation btw, and was recommended by a couple of top notch mecedes techs I know). where I had my latest change. They did a good job, btw. Used the fleetguard filter I gave them, used delvac oil, and put in the 10 plus 1 that I requested (and was one of the selections in the computer)

I have no idea what the other VINs represent but Cummins engines were and are used in many other applications other than Dodge Rams. The same ISB5. 9 used in a medium duty application or motorhome used 15 quarts of oil IIRC.

RIGHT YOU ARE!!!!!!!!!!!! :-laf

You get what you pay for! My 01 states 11 quarts in the owners manual, but I put in all three one gallon jugs when I change MY OWN oil and filter. :-laf

Interesting the oil always shows right on on the dip stick when I check it with 12 quarts. Never over or under filled.

I also let my truck sit over night while the oil drains. I know it might be over kill, but hell I'm retired anyway.

The Vin 6 is the SO and the Vin 7 is the HO. 11 quarts with filter is correct for both. SNOKING
