Can anyone give me the REAL reason why all stock 12v's from the factory will start (immediately) when cranked but when any one puts any mods such as gov springs. pump time, cam plates. .

the crank time gets a little longer before detonation?

Joe? Piers? Chris?

I wish mine started immediately

My stock 12 Valve with 136,XXX miles takes 4 or 5 (maybe 6) seconds of cranking to start. :( I've gotten to the point where I let it spin till it starts if its cold, and if I've been driving already I blip the pedal right after I turn the key. I'm pretty sure it's my fuel return hose after doing research on here, but I have no idea how to change that sucker!:--)

Hey any TDR members wanna come to Mid-TN this summer and help? :-laf

Assuming nothing is wrong with your fuel system and idle is set high enough about the only mod that can cause slow starting is advancing the timing too far. If you think you have slow starting try a rig that's advanced to 22°, takes a good 5-10 seconds cranking and might not even start if it's too cold but runs great afterwards.

Try holding the pedal down just slightly to take the slack out of the fuel rack. If everything is OK it should start instantly. Mine cranks about 1-2 seconds with my foot off the pedal and by taking up the slack it starts instantly. An explanation was given on this forum a while back. Something about the fuel rack "floating" for a few seconds making the engine turn over a couple of times before starting.

Check your idle

As my truck has gotten older, the idle dropped a little (plus a little more with the GSK). Raised it back up to 850 and it once again starts instantly. The idle set is on the back of and down low on the AFC housing. Takes a 10 MM wrench to loosen. The screw is vertical and virtually impossible to see.

Higher Idle really helps

I can drop my idle to 750 or less and it will spin a time or two to start. If I keep the idle at 850 or more, it starts as soon as you hit the key. GSK, #11 plate, every tamper proof cavity violated and it starts immediately.

Increase the idle to see if it helps. You can always set it back down if does not help.

thanks JJW

I remember before the mods the stock idle was higher but after i installed all the goodies i set it to 800 rpm (according to my scanner) but it still took around two second to detonate.

i now set it right where it was stock and she fires in less than a second, 850 is the key ,thanks again:D
