What size of wrench do you need to take off the starter, is it a 10mm 12 point I'm going out to night and get a starter wrench so I can replace my soleniod contacts. I appreciated the info.

That's what I used on my 24V. Sears sells one that is about 8 - 9" long and I used a pipe extension and got it loose from the top - it"s a bear. Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply that where I was going. I got my Larry B contacts and fresh supply beer :-laf . I hope its not too much of a bear.

:) Took me about an hour and a half to do mine. Not a hard job but those bolts are really tight from the factory. Make sure you disconect the bastterys first. Dont ask me how I know this.

Hastings... ... ..... yep, yer starter is bolted by 10-1. 5mm bolts with 10mm 12-point head. They are torqued to an astounding 45ft/lbs. (I looked it up) How do I know? I used a clicker torque-wrench set at 45ft/lbs. My shorter handled ratchet wrench didn't give me enuff leverage.

When I replaced my starter contacts with Larry B's, since all my sockets are 6-points, I went out and bought a new short 12-point 10mm socket and immediately rounded the corners of the top mounted 12-point bolt. There is a slight "bulge" at the socket snap-joint that prevents a straight shot at the starter bolt head. I went out and bought a NEW DEEP 12-point socket that by-passes the slight miss-aligning interference bulge.

But HERES THE TRICK, super-glue yer 10mm 12-point socket onto yer starter bolt and you won't have alignment snap-off problems.

Once you break yer 45ft/lb torque, you can finger unscrew the bolt the rest of the way. Use acetone (fingernail polish remover) to un-glue yer socket from the bolt. Simple, eh?

BTW, Cummins p/n: 3903834 for replacement starter 12-point bolt... ... ..... Dell (WA)

A partly stolen idea. To loosen that top bolt take a metal tube and notch it so that the open end of the wrench will not slip off and block up under the low end of the tube and let the jack down 2 inches and the bolt is loose. then use a ratcheting box wrench to get if finger loose. Don't forget to put the jack stands back before you get back under the truck. Anyway you look at it the job is a female dog. Next time it will be easier but not easy. To tighten I used the same tube from above and whacked it with a heavy hammer. When I had moved the tube down 2 inches I quit before I broke the bolt off, now that would be a job and a half to get a broken bolt out even with the starter out. I once had a boss that would say if it was easy Chorus girls would be doing it for less money.

I could not find a starter wrench but I found a 10mm/11mm 8" long box wrench. I put the wrench on from the bottom and got on top and reached down and broke it loose, then I use a 5" open box combination to take it off. It only took about an hour from start to finish. It was definitely torqued. Thank for all the suggestion.
