I put in a new starter last month and it makes a clicking noise when activated by the key and continued until the engine started. My dad said it was just wear on the flywheel. Has anyone else experienced this? 2001 3500 HO NV5600. Only mod is 3. 5 in. straight exhaust. Thx. Mike.

Welcome to TDR land!

It sounds as if the contacts are not installed correctly or possibly are bad (if rebuilt or remanufactured). Easy one hour fix to install new contacts. Make sure and buy the heavy duty contacts if available. A good auto electric shop should have them in stock.

Godspeed,
Trent

Exactly what Trent said. This was most likely your problem on your old starter as well and probably just needed new contacts. I replaced the ones on my 99' at 120k miles. Go to LarryB's Dodge starting problems solved here. That should take care of your problem. As always though, make sure to check all your connections as well as your batteries. Good luck and keep us posted.

That actually doesn't sound like bad or burned contacts to me. The problems I've seen that turned out to be starter contacts were either blown starter fuses, or clicking instead of cranking the engine. Mike seems to be describing hearing an audible clicking as the starter is turning over the engine.

I think I might be tempted to pull the starter out and examine the teeth to make sure they look okay. Also maybe hook it up to a battery and run it to see if it makes the noise when it's out of the truck.

Hopefully others have better ideas.

Mike

I seem to recall some starters had spacers. Is it possible if you get a new starter it may need some spacers? Maybe your old one had spacers and the new one does not? Just some thoughts.
