I have a napa starter and oddly enough its starting to crank slow. Does anyone know if you can use a rebuild kit like the Larry B's kit in a napa starter or are the rebuild kits only for the OE starters? And if so is the Larry B's kit the best one out there?

My 97 just started having a slow starter. Has new alternator, and I thought the batteries were in good shape, but the truck just about didn't start this morning.

I'm thinking of ordering a new starter and see a Denso for $249, and a no-name for $109. .

Anyone have experience with the no-name versions?

Since you have a NAPA starter I'm assuming it has a lifetime warranty. If so, since you have to pull it anyway, just get a new starter from them. Plan on doing it about once a year if the internet reports are accurate.

That's what I'm leaning towards. The current starter has 185k on it. Has been "rebuilt" once, and I figure it's time.

185k:eek: I installed a set of Larry B contacts around 135k and the starter lasted until I was well over 500k. I do a lot of highway miles between starts, but do not idle while refueling, hooking up trailers, etc. I think your starter has a lot of life left in it.

I totally agree with Gary. I have installed several NAPA new units, various applications.

The best thing about them is the warranty. Country of origin tells the rest of the story.

My truck, only 220k miles, has the original unit with Larry B's upgrades. The Denso, in my opinion, is the best by far.

it was on the truck when I bought it so I don't have the receipt for the warranty, I found a denso rebuild kit online so I'll just rebuild it.

I put in a set of Larry b's contacts several years ago, and the outlasted the starter's chassis, One of the damn "ears" broke off about a year ago. I've got a new set of LBs for the new starter as soon as it starts acting up

I would also check the battery cables to include the crossover and grounds. I recently went to two CAT 1000CCA batteries and replaced all the cables with 2/0 cable. My crossover cable had corrosion that was only found by cutting the insulation back. Now the truck starts with now problems at all.

I got a denso rebuild kit and took it to an electric motor shop. They rebuilt it and it works great. They said they couldn't believe it worked at all, it was a mess in there. It was super dirty and the brushes were almost totally gone. It was a napa starter and he said it looks like I got a good one, it was definitely used quite a while, I didn't buy it so I don't know how long it was on there. Well problem solved, thanks for all of your input. It still wasn't cheap though, I paid $50 for the rebuild kit and $150 for the shop to do it, but it should be as good as a new denso.

I bought the Desno with the large contacts from Larry B and it fixed all my starter problems, they overnighted the starter to me and answered all my questions with great customer service and a really great starter.
