Hey Everyone, its been awhile since I posted.
I have a 2000 3500 5-speed
Recently the starter has not been disengaging fully. It doesn't stay spinning but just lightly drags the flywheel. It would make one hell of a racket if did not have the cummins in the background lol. I pulled the starter saturday(fun top bolt) and noticed the gear does not retract all the way. I can easily push it back in and i t just pops back out. I didn't think that was right so I went to the parts house and took a look at a new one. The gear on the new one was pulled back all the way into the housing confirming that mine is messed up. I don't see anything wrong with it internally. I searched 7 pages of starter problems and only found 1 thread where this happened, but the guy just replaced it. The contacts are worn(one of them) but I don't see them bieng the problem with the starter. I will replace them while I am in there but I don't see that as bieng the cure. Anyone else run into this? I would rather not drop $250ish on a starter when this one works just fine. Thanks a ton for any info.
