Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Starter finally took a dump @ 172,000!

This was bad. I finally meet someone the other night at the honky tonk, and come out to fire up the big bad billy goat, and :Click:... ... Not cool! So, I take it to Sam's, and get the batteries replaced, as they seemed to be the problem... Nope, today after work, I go to start my truck, but no pretty girl to show it to today, and :Click:... . GRRRR!!!!! so I get it clutch started, and we are all good... Diesel shop here wasnt the friendliest, but they usually dont like me when I go in there, because I like to pick their brains, and do it myself... we determine it is the starter, and I have to go spend $300 on what was almost a 3 piece ATS for the tree... Oh well, at least I wont make a bad name for the truck anymore! It goes :Crank, RahRahRahRahRah: The way it should be!!!! 172k is good for a factory starter, right?

ya, but u spent $300 dollars on a $0. 15 cent problem. Only problem was starter contacts and usually only one goes bad and electric repair shops buy them for $0. 15. Oh well, at least it starts now, lol.

Nope, had new contacts in it... the starter had a bad spot in it... I got a click, but today, I forgot to add that it cranked for a split sec, and hit the bad spot, and that was it... . I know about the contacts... . they work wonders!

I'd say you made out pretty well getting that kind of mileage out of a starter. Mine crapped out at about 78,000. A new Mopar starter was going to be over $600, so I went to a friend who has an auto parts store and bought a rebuilt for $150. Same warranty for either starter, one year. So I can replace mine three more times the way I went at it for less than one factory job.



Sorry the ATS 3 piece manifold will be on hold. I've been eyeing that as a possible addition to my truck as well.

did u check the brushes. there cheap too. usually can buy the whole brush kit for $15
