Starter Help

Anyone know of a local chain I can get a good price on a starter?

mine got stuck today and would not turn off. I disconected the batteries but when I hooked them back up it was still stuck.

I tapped on the starter and got it going( ok, so I beat on it) but it worked and got me home.

I know about the contact fix but I can't have my truck down for long and dont know what to buy where to buy it and how to change it.

Just buy the contacts from any place that rebuilds starters/alternators... . I bought mine for about $10. The plunger will last through about 3 sets of contacts before it needs to be replaced.

Clean everything up and give the proper areas some grease and you're good to go for a long time until the contacts go bad again.

The 1st time it sticks... . give it a fix!!!!

It will be much cheaper to take to a shop that does starters and alternators, there are probably dozens of them in Denver. Many will rebuild it while you wait, at the most you can pick it up the next day.

would this happen to be the bolt on the end of the battery cable made of copper with a square head that has a burnt contact area where the plunger hits it?

I got it all apart now just want to make sure I'm replaceing the right part.

Thats the one, a lot better than a $400. 00 starter. Its better to change both contacts but mine had one side soldered in and it was in pretty good shape so I changed only the one side and its been ok so far for 20,000 miles.

Another question. The plunger is a little rough. Can I just clean it up with some scotch bright or sandpaper?

Yep just smooth it out , I did and its still working

The contacts are not soldered in... . the one that usually doesn't wear out as fast just looks like it's soldered in... . it's an illusion!

Got the parts, got it together and it works like a charm.

J. C. Auto Electric on 44th and Sheridan. Nice people even wirewheeled my plunger for me. All they had were heavy duty contacts and they were $12 a pair. They went around the plunger more and had more surface area.

The other contact that looks solderd on is actually a shim between the contact and base and came right off.

By the way, they would have rebuilt my starter for $259 but had no problem selling me the parts.

Well this advice was worth about 8 years worth of subscription to TDR. Thanks for the help

Glad to have maybe helped out a little... .

These starters really are easy to rebuild... but when they go sour... interesting stuff happens (engine won't shut down, engine won't crank over, etc. )!
