OK, I couldn't tell, but I started truck drove 5 miles got out, left it idealing, and a few minutes latter noticed smoke coming from under truck. I turned off quickly and noticed very bad burnt plastic/electrical type smell. . popping hood saw smoke coming from under motor on left side of engine...

smell went away and I could not see anywhere that was burned  . . so I restarted and continued on. . no negative readings on gauges or other. . have started a few times since, but have been disconnecting batteries when I leave it... .

Could this have been a stuck starter burning up??

Is this a problem that may be interrimetant like this??

where should I start a troubleshoot at??

What are spare parts I should carry with me??

Is there something I should be fixing now instead of latter??

Thank You for your time... .

Do a search on starter contacts - this is a known problem where the starter hangs up and can burn up hundreds of dollars of relays and shut down solenoids all for worn starter contacts that cost about $20 to replace.

Well documented on this forum.

Thanks for the reply,

I have been reading other posts, but just was not sure if that was the problem I was having...

I figure I would order contacts from LarryB on Monday morning and change them just in case...

I was looking for a way to confirm this problem... I cannot see anything anywhere externally. . when the smoking occurred it looked like it was coming from the starter area, but I couldn't confirm it...

I was also wondering. . if it was worn contacts. . what else might I have damaged... with all that smoke. . what was burning???

Thanks You

When mine hung up, it fried the lectrical wire insulation going to the shutdown solenoid as well as the fusible link connected to the driver's side battery positive post.
