Have a good friend who has a 95 3/4 ton Dodge cummins. Recently he tried to start his truck and nothing! He removed the starter and went to NAPA and bought a replacement.

Well the replacement didnt work either so he took it back thinking it was defective. They tested it and it was O. K. so they tested his origanal starter and found it tested O. K. also. He put the original starter back on and it started and worked O. K. . His concern is he goiing to be out some where and get stucvk with a non working starter. Has anyone out there had a simular problem?

Thanks in advance.

David Gardner. :)

I would start with removing all battery connections, including the ground cable on the engine and clean with a wire brush. Also what Shendren said.

I had a problem of not starting. when I had the switch in full start position it would not start unless you backed off just a little bit and it would start. sometimes this did't work so I started the truck by crawling under and with a screwdriver crossed hot battery lead to the solenoid term, which told me that the starter was ok. found out later that there was a recall for ignition switch replacment. The stealer talked me into a new starter anyway as I already had 300 thousand miles on and figured that it was about time. If it had failed at home i would have had my old one rebuilt instead of going to the dealer.

Cudio's on the ign switch recall.

See this site or the Fritz site (Dodgeram.org) for recall's.

I changed one (ign switch) adding relay etc in a truck with this symptom and it was cured.

In my own 95 the dealer did the recall at 100 k or so. The wiring was ok, except the switch had been hot and the wires were starting to melt where they were soldered to the ign switch.

I presume you've ck'd the fuel shut off soleniod and relay?

Good luck.

Thanks to all.

Thanks for all the replys. I contacted Larry Buck and he advised me on what to do and supplied the necessary parts to replace the contacts on my friends truck. Worked great. Problem solved and another potential TDR member is recruited.
