I have a 99 with 90,000 miles. It has many starts on the starter(short trips). Whats the life on these starters? Seems to be dragging a little bit. Replace or rebuild? Or wait till it fails?

Starter

Our 96 Dodge had 110,000 miles on it when it started Clicking a few times before it would start. That was our first and only symptom. We replaced the plunger and contacts and it has been fine ever since. We have 235,000 on her now. Hope this helps. Merry Christmas, Diana

Its probably about time you replace the contacts. Good preventative measure. Get larry Bs contacts;)

Terry,

Change the starter contacts. Your truck is at the point where you can expect problems soon. If you don't, you risk being stranded somewhere with a truck that won't start, although the starter usually gives some warning, like occasional clicking.

Get them here:

The hardest part to changing those contacts is getting the starter off the truck. Two hints: 1-Remove the negative wire from BOTH batteries. 2-You will need a 12-POINT, 10mm socket.

Good luck,

Loren

Terry - I have a set of contacts and a plunger sitting in the garage if you have a problem... If not order a set from LarryB and put them in... I have seen three starters work fine after a replacement of parts.

Merry x-mass
