Replaced my contacts a few months ago and now the brushes have completely worn out. The starter didn't even try to spin.

Are there any tips for rebuilding? I've ordered the Larry B's 8250 kit. Anything else I need to look at while it's out and apart?

Commutator (the part of the armature the brushes ride on) and bearings. If the comm gets worn down to bad a new armature will be needed.

Yeah, when you take it apart clean the comm. well ( special attention to removing carbon between the bars). There will be a valley where the brushes wear then a portion where they do not ride. You will see the difference between the two and be able to gauge the wear.

Doesn't look to awfully bad, but, your gonna get dirty. Doesn't look like a whole lot left of the brushes from what I see.

Dave

How many miles ?. I know it doesn't mean a whole lot as you could have 5k miles and 30k starts but it would give a general number for people to start thinking about an inspection or rebuild.

Dave

Ideally would be to take the armature to a good machine shop or rebuild shop and have them turn the armature commutator. It needs to be turned true so the brushes don't bounce up and down from the commutator not being true to the dead center of the armature shaft. I have a lathe and a dial indicator. You chuck up the armature shaft and set up the dial indicator to indicate on a part of the commutator that is NOT in contact where the brushes ran on. That way the commutator is dead on with the armature shaft.
Hopefully, the larry B's kit has all new bearings. Use a good but light weight grease on the gear reduction part of the starter.
