My starter has been hanging up on me lately. It continues spinning about 5 seconds after the key is released and the engine is started. I understand that the contacts in the starter will temporarily "weld" themselves together when this happens, and perhaps one or both of my batteries may be weak. I'll check the batteries, too.
How difficult is the repair kit to install? I am weighing the pros and cons of the repair versus a rebuilt starter with a lifetime warranty.

Tim,

Mine was doing the same thing. I rebuilt the solenoid with Diesel Electric Service's rebuild kit. It's easy to install. My starter was OK after the solenoid rebuild for a year. Then it started again #ad

You won't find the solenoid rebulid kit at the Dodge dealer or a local auto parts store. If you have a good auto electric shop in your area, they might be able to hook you up.

Hemi's exactly right. I got my parts from an automotive electical rebuild shop. Piece of cake to install, took longer to pull the starter.

Tim,
If you have TDR issue 25, see pgs 18 & 19 to see how I repaired mine, if not send me your snail mail address and I will send a hard copy to you. Took me less than an hour to repair mine. . Good LUCK!!

I repaired mine when the starter began clicking. A couple of notes on Diesel Electric Service's solenoid repair kit:

1) I believe the torque specs for the contact posts are too high (18-25 ft-lbs). When attempting to go that high I cracked the plastic insulator and had to re-use one of the originals.

2) As per the instructions, getting the contact plates parallel withe the plunger face is important. After rebuilding mine I inspected these surfaces after several starts and could see each contact was only striking on a corner (I was able to pull the plunger out with the starter still mounted and view the contacts with an inspection mirror). I kind-a think I may have under-torqued #ad
the posts and rotated the contacts when I tightened down the cables. Dropped the starter and did it over again.

The job is fairly easy - I did it twice within a week #ad
