Had the heart stoping sound of click, click, click (panic starting to creep in) and then, vrooom as my truck decided to start. (this during a fire call. Hate when that happens. . ) Anyway, thanks to the great folks on this site, I found the place to get a solinoid rebuild kit.

KEITH SWEARIGAN'S DIESEL ELECTRIC SERVICE 520. 836. 8231

Great service!!!

(My local parts jobbers couldn't get anything for me but a complete starter. Said there are no kits available... . )

It's so easy to install, that you'd really have to try to screw it up. .

(BEEN THERE, DONE THAT BEFORE!!)

While I had the starter out, I checked out it's insides too. The damn thing looked like it just came off the storeroom shelf!!! No wear at all at a little over 100K miles. Less than an hour from disconnecting the batteries to turning the key to see how it starts.

Hmmmm, lets see. $34. 00 (including shipping) for the kit, orrrr

$350. 00 to $450. 00 for a new starter. . Just call me frugal... :D Hope this helps someone else. .

Sounds great bigkavr, I put the kit in my counsin's truck not too long ago when it started clicking and sticking. Very easy job like you say. Just the other day I had my local Napa order up another set of contacts for me so I will have them on hand when mine decides to go south, haven't picked them up yet. The Napa here was able to order the parts from a rebuild shop in Salt Lake City, Ut.

bigkavr,

Yes, easy deal. I didn't do whole rebuild the auto electric shop I went to would only sell me one contact point (battery contact) but then again it was the only thing warn out (burnt up)in the solenoid. He did wire brush the other point and washer on the plunger. So for 8 bucks my starter acts like it is brand new.

CumminsPower98,

I plan on getting some extra points also. The auto electric man and an old diesel mechanic told me that the battery contact point would usually be the only one to wear out.

The diesel mechanic said the starter would probably never wear out. Hope not ( in my life time any way).

Yup, not too bad a job. I did mine 9 months and just over 30K miles ago. The only thing to watch is making sure you get the contacts parallel with the plunger as per the enclosed instructions. If you don't, the full contact surface won't be used and will lead to premature failure.

I thought I was pretty careful about this. Drove the truck about a week and with the starter still mounted, pulled the cover and took the plunger out to take a peek with an inspection mirror. Each contact was only striking the plunger on one side. I think this happened when I torqued the cables down. Pulled the starter and did it over.

Had that click , click , click heart stopping sound also . Then one day nothing but click , click . All I did with mine was put two pieces of copper together ( ONE INSIDE THE OTHER ) flattened them in a vise ,bent it over 90 degree's and drilled out the hole . In essence duplicated the piece out of copper pipe ,installed it months ago and its been working like a charm since , but since a kit is available I guess I should put one in... . Where can I get one
