My starter was running on sometimes so I changed the contacts as people on this site suggested. Now the solenoid works but the starter doesn't spin. Was it something I did or coincidence? Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help you all can give!

Frank

If you hear a snap or click like the starter solenoid throws like it's supposed to then you have something that is not right inside of the solenoid. Make sure that one of the big contacts is not cocked so that the disk can't make a connection with the other contact.

Thanks Joe I'll try that. I took it to be tested and you could see the shaft come out but it didn't spin. Any other ways to test it?

I'll try resetting the contacts tomorrow- gotta go to work now.

Thanks For the Help!

I took it apart again and found that the new contacts I got were a little different from the old ones- the contact leg was too long, not letting the disk against the contacts. I put the old ones back in until the starter shop is open on Mon.

Thanks again for the help!

Starter run on

Now that you spent the money and got it working again maybe the next owner of this proplem won't have to dig in his pocket. First of all i will state no matter if it is a big rig or a little 4/6 wheeler. .

This is a common problem and what happens for what ever reason you have suffered a lack of voltage to the contact disc and it becomes fused together. starter run on. .

NEXT time run to the closest big hammer and hit the starter case as hard as you can. . Underneath the Dodge works!

On some big rigs you may have to use a long solid bar to reach the sol/starter --the blow will dislodge the contacts AND unless the cable ends/battery's are up to par it Will never happen again. .

Delco told me years back this would happen on new'er starters than on ones with miles/hrs every time i saw it the units under 100k never brand new.

My d/cummins did it around 40k gave it a good belt /cnecked conn/bat/ect found nothing as in the case of the big rigs ,and has never happened again(Dodge).

Try it you may like it!! Oh yes delco said new/or/ rebuilt solenoid's so the owner that rebuilt his may see this again. .

Another note the strap between the sol and starter contact /stud/bolt is a high load area make sure these are tight,if it appears burnt remove wire wheel contact(strap & fastners) and reinstall.
