First post (I think)... hopefully this is in the correct area.

My trouble is that my every now and then when I crank my truck it will fire and start running but the starter wont stop cranking. It just sits there hung up freewheeling. Until today it has always lasted just a couple seconds, just long enough to where you can tell something is not right. Today it hung up for about thirty to forty seconds. I tried everything I could think of to try and get it to stop running and nothing worked. Turned the key from on to off to start and nothing... motor and starter kept running no matter where the key was. Eventually the starter just stopped running through no efforts of my own.

The other week on shutdown, I believe, the starter kicked in and every time the engine tried to shut off the starter would kick it back on, even with the key in the off position.

I'm not sure if this is one problem or a combination of problems. I've heard of starter contact issues, but in reading old posts, I'm not convinced that is it based on what I've read. Maybe the fuel shutoff soleniod is out of adjustment.

I use this truck every day for my business which is why I haven't got it into the dealer yet, and I'm hoping someone on here has had this happen before and can point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ben

Could be contacts are part of the problem. Check for cut insulation on the wire that energizes the starter solenoid and the battery cable. If they touch, it will keep the starter energized or if they touch momentaraly, it will make the starter spin. Been there, done that, on a semi.

If it happens again, dissconnect the batteries.

Sounds like the "classic" case of a worn starter contact. You really need to fix that because it'll burn up the wiring harness if it stays stuck on a long time. Keep a hammer in the truck to wack the starter if it happens again...

Thanks for all the input guys! I knew someone probably knew what this was. I'll give the starter contacts a try. Does anyone have a link to the guy who sells the oversized ones?
