This morning, the truck did not want to start. It would turn over and try to fire, after 8-10 tries, and lots of white smoke. So, let it sit for a couple minutes, tried it again, and it fired right up. I have excellent fuel pressure, so am thinking I should change the fuel filter, about 6000 miles on present filter.

Would appreciate any thoughts/comments.

Thanks

White Smoke

Bill: the white smoke is unburnt diesel fuel. I suspect that your grid heater relay didn't connect and actually heat the grid. This would have resulted in too cold cumbustion chamber temperatures to ignite the diesel fuel. On the second try there was enough heat to get the engine running.

Next time it is cool or cold, watch the voltmeter when you cycle the grid heater [wait to start light], the voltage on my truck drops to about 10 volts while the grid is drawing current.

It was 34* here this morning.
