Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Starting Problem

hi guys,

i have a 12 valve 2500 4x4 and ever since i got it it will not start with the foot off the go pedal for about 6 revolutions . if you got to start it and you press the throttle just a little it will fire up instantly . is this normal or do i have a problem ? your assistance is appreciated

What bighammer said is very likely the problem. If you have an auto transmission, it should idle around 800 to 850 rpms with transmission in gear and air conditioner on. At least that is what I've read on this forum before. I have mine set at 800 (maybe a bit lower) and it starts fine.

Yup ,idles too low. I have mine set at 950 no load in park. The idle screw is hard to see. I Set mine a year ago for the same problem. If I remember this right, you need 10mm box wrench and socket. I set mine with the engine off and estimated guess. I don't like having my hands in there with the engine running. Also check your throttle cable adjustments.

Unless it bothers you to step on the throttle when starting you might want to leave it alone... personal preference.

I have an automatic trans. My idle is about 650 rpms. I need to press the throttle to make it start quickly, and I can stall it reliably if I whap the throttle and relase it quickly, which some follks don't like. However my brakes certainly appreciate not having the higher rpms in traffic and I like the lower idle.
