98. 54 24 valve auto, when I turn the key on, wait to start light doesn't appear till about 6 seconds later and if I try to crank it before the light is on, it just turns, but it don't fire. As soon as the light is on, it fires right up. It happens at any engine temperature and/or time of the day. I noticed that the lift pump don't start running until the wts light appears. Does anybody have an idea, what's causing it?

You may have a bad IAT sensor. The grid heaters are controlled by the ECM which gets its info from the IAT. I'm guessing that there is a programmed delay for the info to get back to the ECM and if that fails then it uses the last "good" value.

Can you you check for codes?

I had sort of the same issue some time back. Do what AKAMAC suggested, auto zone will pull and clear the codes if any are there, be sure to write them down if there are any.
Then go home and disconnect the batteries, turn on the headlights and let it set for a while, maybe an hour. Hook up the batteries (after turning off the lights) and turn on the key, but dont bump the starter, push the go peddle down slowly and let it up slowly, turn off the key and then start the truck. That will reset the tps and force the computer to reset and maybe fix your problem if no codes were found, it did mine.
Hope it helps

Sorry guys but I have to ask. I've learned a few abbreviations in my time here-apps, cel, lp, etc, but I don't know IAT. Please help-

Curious in Connecticut.

I did the whole thing with disconnecting the batt cabels and cleanes the iat sensor and it still dose it... any other suggestions?

My 99 does the exact same thing. Does anyone else have suggestions to fix this. How can the IAT sensor be tested? Will the IAT always throw a code if it is malfunctioning?

Mine also is doing the same thing, I started a separate thread before I saw this one. its called lift pump has delayed start .
I still have the same problem but there was some good advice in it.

James,

Is the ECM on your truck the original, or has it been replaced? If it's been replaced, do you know the Dodge part number of it?

I ask because it seems I've read several threads going back for some time where people have complained about a delayed wait-to-start problem and I vaguely recall a common connection was that the ECM wasn't original. If that's the case, it could be the replacement ECM or software flash update is wrong for the particular truck.

Or maybe I'm just grasping at straws. :)

Regards,

John L.

As far as I know its the original. I am not the original owner though. But it has been running fine for the last 3 years until a few days ago
