a friend of mine has a 98. 5 24v & everytime he tries to start

the truck he has to turn the key on & off then leave it in the on

position for several seconds before it will start... its almost like

its losing prime... but his instrument cluster went nuts when

the problem started happening... . has anyone else had this

problem? is there a simple fix? any info would be appreciated.

btw, he took it to the dealer & they said it was fine?

It's odd that the instrument paned did that. Or do you mean it's still acting up? Here's a possible problem. Can you smell fuel? If so it could be a leaky return line. (which wouldn't explain the instrumentation) My return line cracked right at the banjo fitting off of the vp44. I could smell fuel though, checked with a flash light when it was running and sure enough fuel was dripping off of the return line. I thought it was a washer, but it was a cracked line, very hard to see as it was right at the solder joint.

thanks for the info... .

i talked to him this a. m. & he said the dealer did fix the

instrument cluster. he said he waits a good 20 seconds

before it will actually start but doesnt smell fuel...

hes got 120,000 on the truck. i'm thinkin hes lost his prime

either the rubber fuel hoses or something like what you

described. the thing is, it doesnt matter if it runs for an hour

or ten minutes, 9 times out of 10 he has to wait to start. .

my poor ol 12v had to get new fuel lines when it happened

to me but i could smell fuel... . i just dont know.

check out the pump

Sounds to me that the lift pump is weak or the check ball is bad inside it. Have the pressures checked. I am pretty sure that the pump is bad. A plugged fuel filter would not make the lift pump run for that long. A good lift pump should only have to run for about 2 secs max
