Has anyone else run into this. The truck is not being used for commercial use. I have had my 96 3500 with State Farm since July of 97 and never has there been any mention of needing to switch it to a commercial policy. It has standard plates on the back, not commercial. One of my friends has a 2000 3500 with State Farm and he called his agent today who called his underwriter who said that they used to do this years ago because most of the people who bought one ton trucks were farmers and the trucks were being used on the farm.

Thanks in advance

Helipilot.....

That's totally lame. They have to have a better reason/proof than just the weight of your truck.

Get their position is writing, and get your "good neighbor" agent to earn his or her commission and be an advocate for you. Otherwise, take the fools to your state Insurance Commissioner. If they truly have a legitimate means to do this through an insurance filing, then take your business somewhere else. You will not like commercial rates.

I was getting quotes today online and got to a point on Progressive's site that stated they would not cover 1 ton vehicles "or any vehicle with a payload capacity greater than 1000 pounds"(sic). Seems like that would eliminate many vehicles.
In this case, how can they make you get a policy based on weight?

Progressive is my insurance company. No problems insuring the truck. I don't have commercial rates, either.

I had a 1965 Chevy 3/4 ton truck that had a wooden bed, they charged me commercial rates on it. This was about 10 years ago. Hope you can get it worked out.

Go somewhere else for insurance. I'm an Independent Insuranec Agent. There is no way they can get away with charging you commercial rates when the truck is used for personal use only. If you have trouble go to your states Commissioner of Insurance.

They're blowing hot air up your tail pipe. I also have progressive and my rates are not commercial. No problem droppng the 98 and adding the 01.

I have been an Allstate agent for 10 years and even though I don't agree with all of my companys procedures, I can tell you that they Do Not require commercial insurance on the 3500 Dodge C-30 Chevy or F-350 Ford.

If State Farm is pushing the issue, check with Allstate.

I also have had State Farm for the last 30 years and I'm on my third dually with them and no problem, licensed for 10,000 lbs and its a commercial plate but regular insurance..... Pete

Maybe State Farm needs more revenue. A friend just had an increase on his Explorer. Something about changing the rating due to the number of accidents Explorers have had lately.

Thanks for the replys guys. After this little stunt, I am going to change agents at the very least. I have a 96 and a 2001. 5 dully and a 93 Mazda twin turbo RX-7 with them as well as my home owners policy. This office has only women in it and they are totally clueless. For the record I have nothing against women insurance agents or women in general. Its just that when someone is taking alot of my money and I am getting next to nothing in return, (material objects), I at least want them to understand what I am talking about when I am talking to them.

I have State Farm as well and no problems. Sounds like your agent wants to increase his commission by selling a higher insurance policy.

I dumped state farm several years ago when they wanted to drop me because of one minor wreck. I had had 3 vehicles and a house insured with them for the past 5 years with no claims. I am with Farm Bureau now and am very happy with them. I use my truck for my daily commuter and for my farm and pay alot cheaper rates with the accident on my record than I was paying with state farm.

I dumped State Farm, except for the travel trailer, last year because of their treatment of my daughter. Saved a few hundred bucks to boot.

I have some new interesting information. According to State Farms under writers North Carolina passed a new law a couple years ago that says: Any vehicle with a GROSS weight rating over 10,000 pounds, must have commercial insurance. This means the weight of the truck plus its maxium payload in the bed of the truck. All 2001 3500's have a 10,500 pound gross weight rating with the exception of the 3500 club cab 4x4 and it has a rating of 11,000 pounds gross.

Now for the good news. The commercial policy is $104. 00 cheaper per year than the standard policy.

The under writer said that the only difference between the two policies is the commercial policy cannot have rental car or towing insurance.

I hope this helps you guys out here in NC. I haven't checked, but I assume that older trucks say 99's and 2000's probably have the same gross weight rating. All of us here will probably run into this sooner or later.

However, I mentioned to my lady agent this morning about the information that I had gotten from alot of fine upstanding 3500 truck owners on the TDR website and she gave me more attitude than I could tolerate and said that most people on the internet are full of hot air when it comes to giving advice on a subject. Needless to say my four policies are being EXTRACTED from her immediatly and given to my friends State Farm agent in High Point NC.

Thanks for the info Wayne!!!! I' will be in touch with my agent and if there is too big of an attitude I'll be getting in touch with you as to your friends agent..... Pete

What are you guys going to do about not haveing towing covered on your truck ins. ???
My State Farm policy covers any thing that I can legaly tow. Ie car hauler and and cargo, the 5th wheel, or any other thing that gets pulled (yours, mine or his ) xcept on a chain or strap.

JNutter-

I think what HeliPilot meant by "cannot have rental car or towing insurance" was that a) if his truck's in the shop because of a wreck, they won't pay for a rental car and b) if his truck breaks down, they won't pay to tow it.

Nothing to do with actually using his truck to tow.
