My Conversion 79 F-350 Whats it worth??

Looking for green...

A big farm auction (farm and lots of other stuff) is starting soon in my area. This thing is huge, runs for 6 days, and has tons of interesting stuff and junk.

Last year I watched irrigation units with 4bts sell for $500 to a high of $2500 for one with only 100 hours on it. These are complete with control panels, starters, ready to hook up to a pump gearhead.

I'm thinking about buying one for my 87 Dodge PowerRam.

I understand that the injection pump is different than you'd find in a wheeled application, but considering the price these things go for you can deal with a few issues.

Anyone know what issues would have to be dealt with to run one in a truck?

Thanks, RR

PS, just remembered, the split is usually about 50/50, Case units to tan Cummins units. Many have water to air exchangers.

Any reason to favor one over the other?

You got to be sure that the one you buy has an inj pump that's able to vary the speed of the engine.

Some of those type engines are a fixed RPM (I suppose mostly gen sets etc).

Steve, thanks for the link, excellent post.

Back when I was a member of the working world I sold several natural gas fueled Chevy engines (350 and 454 cid) to farmers who were replacing both electric and diesel units. At the time it was a good move since natual gas was a lot cheaper than today.

With that limited background I have a bit of knowledge in this area but not much.

What I don't know is can the pump on one of these engines be moded to operate satisfactorly with in a truck. I could see buying parts from the appropriate 5. 9bt pump and swapping out with the well engine pump.

Hopefully someone will chime in since the sale starts Monday the 27th. For anyone interested it's the Backgate Auction in Stuttgart, Arkansas.

Yes, the pump and plumbing can be changed out at substanuail cost. BUT The EPA tag on the engine will still say NOT EPA approved for on road use. You can not get around that tag and try to licence it for on road use.

Steve

Luckly at the moment at least, Arkansas isn't inspecting vehicles. Of course that will likely change at some point.

I just visited your photo album on the Scout, I know you've heard this many times, but, NICE WORK. Hope it's still working for you, now, when you finish the Jeep, how much for the Scout? Just kidding,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Kinda.

RR

Thanks Morparguy,

It's a Willys! not a jeep. Trust me. Yes I know lot of state's don't follow through on emission testing or registration on Diesel repower's, but at the stroke of a pen in the legislature your vehicle can become illegal.

Me sell my Scout? of course but I can't put a price on it. Oh well.

Looking for a set of D60's that won't break so often.

Steve

Hey if I win the Lotto you can have it!.

Not sure, but I would think you could find a tag off a "road legal" version and put it on your engine. They are just glued or pop riveted on. The pencil pushers who "inspect" would never know.

I used a 93 pumping unit 5. 9 in a '94 spotter truck for a customer. He had neglected the engine and it started blowing oil. He needed the truck up and going ASAP so I did the swap. Took the "old" engine apart later and found the rings were carboned up and stuck on #3 cylinder. All cylinder walls were still perfect. I still have the engine as a spare. it is a 190 horse and the one I put in was a 140 horse. It actually pulles better than the newer truck he now has (also cummins/allison).

In doing the swap, I had to swap oil pans, exhaust manifold/turbocharger, oil pickup tube and the top plate on the intake manifold to work with the existing accessories. The donor engine is the tan color with VE pump and the one it replaced is black with the P7100. I did this swap over 2 years ago and it is still going great.

Steve, ah a Willis, yes I know the difference, my use of Jeep was along the lines many used to use Kodak for anything to do with photography. I didn't mention it but that project is gonna be a nice ride. Is it going to be a offroader or more of a classic SUV with off road capabality, you know with air, cd, lots of sound deadner on the firewall prior to engine installation and inside of course that would sure beat a late model SUV.

Diesel, I had not considered the oil pan change out, will look at that this week when we go over to prescout the auction.

RR

I wanted to note that any pump shop can swap out the governor section of the pump so that it is appropriate for the intended application.

TDR member "therabbittree" recently swapped out the governor section from a 4BT VE pump with one from a Volkswagen road going type pump. We'll see if it works out... I'm optimistic that it will work OK. So, he'll have a 4BT pump with a VW governor installed on a VW engine.
