HI Guys,

There are 2 plates, ½" thick hanging at the 100 yard point at my rifle range. Some holes are clean through them like it was done on a drill press. I couldn't believe it.

Question: Can a 30-06 does this? Or what caliber would punch these kind of holes.

a 30-06 will leave those craters you see in it, untill they shoot armor peircing. then those pans are like paper. a friend of mine brought up his 47 pound . 50 cal and that thing would shoot through 1 inch thick solid steel plates (just like your pics only thicker) and it went through it, no problem. it seriously made sparks when it hit it, then proceded to nock the plate (like 100 lbs) off the chain we had it hanging from. it was freakin crazy :)

From what i've seen it's usually higher velocity rifle rounds which will punch through steel. I remember shooting a 300 win mag through some steel targets... but i want to say they were probably only 3/8" thick. I tell you what, it sure re-emphasizes the power of a rifle.

A . 338 Win Mag will do that to at least 300 yards. 7mags and other fast and bigger calibers are all capable. Scarey, huh? Also, the FMJ vs. HP is a factor, as stated above.

That looks like Blue trails :) And if it's lanes 18-20 it *Could be from a 30-06 Win, a ruger m-14 308. that I was plinking with. :-laf

What make of . 50 does your buddy have? I'm wanting one but can't decide which one. Thanks.

Nick

You should see what a . 500 hollowpoint does to a HP 1000 laserjet printer down range. Remember a LJ 1000 is an old model and has a steel chassis.

We only use those targets in the winter time, in the summer when the Fruit Flies are out at the 100 yard range we use them as targets.

But just to be fair to the other shooters on the range we call out their eye color before we splat them through the backboard ! :-laf :-laf :-laf

That is until we gather up enough atoms to split at the 600 yd range :-laf :-laf

lol, i heard that bout the sticky note, i use em often along with an assortment, anything that can be shot is shot, lol, a 338 win mag with 300 grain hollow points makes a nasty mess out of a watermelon and a squash, lol

Well it's all in fun but if you can't put it on a post it note at 100 yards you probably should just carry a shotgun. bg

I shot my 223 (AR 15) through some railroad plate. It was I'd guess 3/4" thick.

I was shooting 62 Gr steel core ammo.

The M14 wouldnt do it with lead core ammo, but the 223 with steel core zipped right through.

My little brother was NOT amused. They were his pistol gong targets. :-laf

I have a bunch of 30 cal steel core projectiles I got for a good price.

I've loaded some ammo for the ol Garand up to 2900 FPS with this projectile. That's rockin for a 30-06. :-laf
