ok i have read on here a couple times that the 4. 5 turn steering box on our dodges is a mistake and they are supposed to be 3 turn boxes? if this is the case where can one get the 3 turn box and what should one expect to pay for it? my 96 has the 4. 5 turn box  but it seems to steer good i do have the stabilizer coming for the box but it handles pretty cool it has just a little wander but nothing like my old 77 chevy 4 by 4

I bought mine from PSC and got the 20:1(4. 5 turn) box and wish I would have gone with the 16:1. Don't get me wrong the 20:1 box is great and has been one of the better mods I've done. It has very little effort but I think I would like the 16:1 better for the quicker steering.

I got mine from PSC as well and it is a well built box. The problem with the 4 1/4 turn boxes is that they tend to have more play in them. If yours doesn't have a lot of play in it, then there is no reason to replace it. However, if there is a delay between the input and output shafts turning, then you should replace it. The 3 turn box is the preferred box since it has a tighter feel and you can turn more quickly.

thanks for the reply's my box seems ok that way but the output shaft is loose i will keep them in mind looks like a good company and seems like they have a good product

I remember looking up the part numbers at napaonline and IF i'm remembering correctly, the 2500 used the quick box and the 3500 used the slow box.

How has the sucess rate been on taking the box off and going through the factory adjustment procedure? I have the factory manual, bought all new hoses so I don't rish contaminating the system with hose flaking during handling and a 2nd gen that has a bit too much play in the pitman shaft, idler is new.

I know of people having success with adjusting the bearing preload on the box. As for actually taking the steering shaft off and removing the cover then tightening the nut in there, I have not had success with it. There is a dodge TSB that covers this but I think that it is meant to be performed on a relatively new box rather than one that is worn out. If you live somewhere where rust is an issue, you probably wont be able to get the cover off the box without a lot of time and hassle.

Best steering thing you can do is by the stabilzer bar that spans the two frame rails and supports the end of the pitman arm shaft of the steering box with a flange bearing.

I am currently on my 3rd psc box... . don't get me started on those!

i have the stabilizer ordered should have it tommorow. i am verry happy with my truck as my previus one was a 77 chevy i just want to get her into good shape and make her dependable

The steering systems on these "older" dodge trucks can be a headache. You will find yourself investing a ton of money into them to get them to perform. However, coming from a '77 truck your expectations aren't quite as much as someone coming from another vehicle to the dodge truck. The newer dodge trucks have rack and pinion steering systems and are far far better than the ole' steering box method.

I also have a 1990 ZR1 Corvettte (rack and pinion or course) and when I compare the two I get ****** off. I have also driven a 2005 dodge 3500 with rack and pinion and it was so far better than mine that it has driven me to the point I am at now - buying a 2005 or newer truck this coming year.
