The magnefine is too small for our trucks... we have 5/8 inch line, they only come in 1/2 inch. You will need to look into something like a hydraulic filter and mount (like for a log splitter) and add a few feet of hose. Probably find them easiest at northern tool...

ddivinia,

As far as I know there is no filter on the system from the factory but there are aftermarket filters that can be added to the return line. I added one to my jeep since I use a hydro assist ram and didn't want to ruin it with any particles. When I changed the power steering pump and box on my wifes Cherokee the warranty required that I add a filter to keep the warranty.

Magnefine Inline Transmission Power Steering Filters

I have hydro assist on a Jeep, works great with large tires in the rocks. The steering is awesome offroad, steering wheel doesn't kick around and works really well. I don't really like it on the street, the steering is kind of numb and has no feedback whats so ever. It steers fine and the wheel returns to center without issue I just don't like the feel. Maybe in the Dodge it would feel different or better, I don't know.

Yeah I have a rock rig with 40in Iroks and hydro assist, I am very happy with theh way it handles offroad and onroad. I just added Don Thurens tie rod and drag link, and fox stabilizer and now my truck seems to drive worse than with the stock components. So now I will do the steering box brace and thinking about doing the hydro assist, just looking to talk to people who may have already done it.

Yeah, What's up with these crappy steering boxes!!! My first 06 had the box replaced at 48k, Now my second 06 needs a box and it's only got 42k on it. The dealership will replace it for free as I have the extended warranty but obviously Dodge skimps on quality parts. I'm going to let the dealership swap it out then the next week I'll swap it for a RedHead box.

how does one make a filter for the return line for the power steering? Is there not a hard line fitting on the return line??? guess i should go look and what size is the return line??? thanks

The smaller one (toward the engine) is 18mm. The larger one (toward the front driver's tire) is probably? 20mm but I did not have that one. Crescent wrench. There are 0 rings there and it is not necessary to torque the heck out of it. On mine, I found it easier to take the front left fender liner out, drain the PS pump reservoir and remove the return line from the bottom of the reservoir to make access easier.

I'm getting pretty good at replacing the gearbox and pump, but not fixing it... ...
