Steering Box Problem

I have been feeling a thump thru the steering wheel and hearing clunking noise when I feel it. I can grab the steering shaft out of the box, wiggle and move it pretty good. There is a lot of slop in there.



Is the steering box rebuildable or am I stuck with buying new one?



Did a search the forums have not found anything yet about rebuilding the steering box.

Replacing the steering box is fairly common on 3rd gen trucks. It is usually because of a leaking seal. I just had mine done at 33K. If the truck in you signature is the problem truck, your base warranty should cover it. The clunk you speak of could also be the track bar. I just had that replaced when the steering box was done. It caused a loud clunk when turning lock to lock (like when parking).
