I have been browsing the thread on the 08 steering kits and I may be missing something, but it doesn't look like the steering box is different, is it?

My steering box is leaking bad and I may have to do something before I do any upgrades to the steering system.

I have a spare steering box that a guy I knew at a dealership gave me. He took it off for warranty reasons and gave it to me. I planned on sending it in for a rebuild so that I don't have any down time. Just a swap on a saturday in the garage.

Does anyone know of a good rebuilder?

Any thoughts?

Joe,

Have you considered doing the BD steering box stabilizer when you replace the steering box? Its supposed to cure or help with the death wobble issues.

One of the guys at work is a real hands on gear head type... He can rebuild anything or probably knows where things can get rebuilt. He rebulds all sorts of obscure parts that I wouldn't even think of... I go back on the 5th, I can ask him then.

Regards,

Louis

I have one rebuilder in Portland I have talked to and may just take it there. I was just looking for other opinions.

I considered the BD brace, but I usually try to steer away from BD products.

I am very interested in this 08 stuff, not sure why but it seems like the "IN" thing right now.

Are you sure the spare steering box (or yours for that matter) doesn't just have the o-ring leak? Mine did and they just replaced it under warranty. From reading the threads, replacing the O-ring could be the easiest fix, rather than a full rebuild.

Yeah, that's possible

I guess I'd have to check it out a bit more

Check out the Defiant Steering Brace here--http://www.defianttruckproducts.com/prod_display.php?cat=-%20DODGE&subcat=STEERING%20BOX%20SUPPORT&cat_id=69

I had the local dealership (the have an excellent Ram mechanic there) put it on when they did the 08 steering upgrade. Between the upgrade and the steering box support, my truck handles like a 9000# sports car. Paul at Defiant has GREAT customer service and a TRULY well designed and manufactured product. The 08 upgrade offers redesigned tie rod ends, a heavier steering damper, as well as a newer pitman arm. The pitman arm is NOT part of the TSB, but for $75. oo I had the pitman arm installed it as well. The pitman arm is necessary for lifted trucks, or trucks with larger wheels. The new one gives more clearnance beteween the Pitman and other vital organs. Also check here--

Thanks for all the info

How long has the TSB been out for the 08 steering? I wish I would of known sooner, maybe warranty would of covered some parts

There is a bit of confusion on the tsb. When it came out it listed what to check for wear etc. It listed tie rod ends as a possibility. Those part #s were superceded in the parts book to the new style steering (08 steering is a misnomer, many 08s had the same as the 03).

The new style steering has no servicable parts from Dodge so if things don't change and you need a tie rod end you will be buying the complete pkg again

Well that's not a good deal. I'll be doing some research in the spring if I have the spare $$$ so I can rebuild the front end.
