Our '96 1/2 T 4x4 started pumping out power steering fluid at the nut that holds the steering arm on to the steering box. I assume that the seal above the arm is bad causing the fluid to run down the shaft to the nut, although I don't understand why it the fluid is not coming out above the steering arm.

How do I replace this seal. Does the box have to be removed from the frame or can the seal be removed after removing the steering arm?

My old 84 silverado did the same thing, poured fluid by the seal above the pitman arm. I had to buy a pitman arm puller, remove the big nut, & pull the arm. Then couldn't figure out how to get the seal out. I called around & somebody told me to fire it up, and crank the steering wheel left & right. The hydraulic pressure should push it out, & he was right, it popped it right out. You might try it, worked in my case.

Yes, that should work on your truck.

The other way is to use a punch, put a small hole in the seal and pull it out with a slide hammer. Don't go too deep to hurt a bearing or bushing.
