steering box swap

Does anyone know if the 2wd and 4wd use the same steering box. I am working on a 91 350 4x4, but I have a streering box on a 90 2wd 250.

I am not sure on the late model 1st gens. But up to 1980 the answer is no. The box turns different for the 4x4 trucks.



Turn the shaft clockwise on both boxes and see if the pitman arms turns the same direction. If they do not. Then the boxes will not interchange.



This was the issue up to 1980. The 2wd box turned the oppsite way of the 4x4 box.



It was interesting to drive one with the wrong box. :-laf :-laf

As far as I can tell from the 89/92/93 FSM all the power steering gears are the same between 4X2 / 4X4 trucks.

The FSM will not show the difference. The setup is the same for both boxes. They just use the setup info for both boxes in the older manuals.



The manual to look in is a junkyard interchange manual. It will tell if the boxes interchange. If you don't want to compare by turning the steering shaft and watch the pitman arm movement.
