2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Steering box trouble

Heard a cloonking sound in my front end. Had mechanic look at it and he tells me that my steering box is going. He tells me the shaft comming down out of the Steering box ( I don't remember what its called) has to much up and down play in it. More play than could be adjusted out of it. He doesn't want to adjust it for fear of warranty violations. Anyone else have or had this problem?
