I just purchased a 01 dodge 2500. I have some play in the steering. I have moved the steering wheel looking for play in the steering shaft. Not seeing any at that point, I got under the truck and tried moving the pitman arm. Don't see any play in the tie rod ends or any of the other joints.

Anyone have any other sugestions?

If I need a steering box, does anyone have any sugestions on what to buy?

Solidsteel works great

My truck was starting to wonder bad. I even had to slow down in heavy crosswinds. Solidsteels 03 track bar upgrade made an huge difference in how the truck handled and felt. I put the dss on a week ago and it took out all of the play the steering wheel had. I feel it drives just as well as our 01 intrepid now. However if your steering box is worn, the dss will only bandaid the problem.

Steering Box failure

Has anyone had their steering box fail. On my 01 2500 4x4 it has gone out twice. Once at 49000 and again at 74000. The dealer has replaced these with extended warranty but this seems excessive. Is there something I should be looking at.

Steering Box

MTegtmeyer,

I too have play in my steering and need to fix it.

I have a Lukes Link for my track bar which helped since my stock bushing was shot.

Last weekend I had my wife turn the steering wheel left and then right while

I watched underneath, scary thought you under the truck engine running.

Just kidding, the Lukes link was tight no movement, tie rod ends looked good

etc, ball joints are decent. So I was shaking my head what the heck is going on here, I kept watching as she repeated this. I've done the steering box adjustments per the TSB mentioned.

Being a machinist for the past 35 years your eyes can see things like runout

since you see it almost daily. I put a pointer in my hand held on to the sway bar with it, had the pointer at the center of the steering box shaft and then

I saw it. The shaft moved left and right a bunch in my opinion a total of about

. 250 to . 375 left and right as she turned the wheel.

I ordered a DSS that day I hope I've caught it before the steering box needs

replacement.

I was surprised at the movement I saw, its no wonder the truck wanders!

Try this and I'll bet you see as much movement as I did!

Steering box wear......

Please refer to this thread (the whole thing for best info).

https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=114584

I decided a while back that the Y style steering linkage was contributary to steering box failure and feel that there had to be an additional improvement that can greatly reduce it (eliminate).

Then I found an OEM solution... ... ... .

The driveability difference after the HD steering retrofit is night and day. You decide... ...

Mine wanders too. I have a DSS that helped Next I adjusted the box, I don't think that helped. I just got a box from Steer & Gear but haven't installed it yet. They said the stock box has slop in them new. They bore it out and put a bronze bushing in. Hope to install sometime this week and will report. The dump trucks at work have less wander than my truck.

Later Mike

This would help... .
