My steering box is leaking a ton of fluid out the bottom where the pitman arm (I think that is right) is, can this seal be replaced or do I need to get a whole new box, and where is the best place to get either one? Any info would be appreciated due to the fact that it is dripping constantly, too much to really drive the truck.

thanks,

Cory

If the seal is gone the bearing mostly likely is also. The DSS will hold the shaft in place if you can install a new seal. However I think I would start with a new box. Have someone move the wheel back and forth while you watch to see if shaft is moving around side to side. I think others have put a DSS on a box with a loose lower bearing with good results, and in your case if you get the shaft centered before tighten the new bearing in place, the seal may not leak anymore. I had a 94 half ton and the box started to leak just after the warranty expired so I called NAPA to see if they had one in stock, unfortunately a woman that shouldn't have been working there answered they phone, she said yup, we got one so I went there and what they had was a pinion shaft seal. So I ordered the pitman shaft seal and when it came in I changed it myself and never had another problem but only owned the truck for another 30,000 miles. You'll need a puller for the pitman arm and then the easiest way to get the seal out is to start the truck and turn the wheel to full lock, that will blow the seal out, then shut the truck down quick. That was a trick my brother taught me and has worked well for him for many years and worked great for me.

When I purchased my truck the mechanic that did the inspection said the steering box was leaking and needed to be replaced... ..... I pointed out to him that the box was not leaking at all but the slober tube was positioned directly above the box and THAT was the source of the mess

I just replaced the steering box w/ a unit From PSC, a DSS steering bracket, all of the drag links and tie rod ends and driver's side ball joints. Drives better than new. I had already replaced the track bar end w/ a Luke's Link. It's a shame we have to re-do DC's engineering for them.

I replaced pitman shaft seals on a '98 and a '99, both have worked fine for over a year. I didn't even remove the box, remove the pitman arm and the cover bolts on top and pull the cover and shaft out the top, locktite the cover bolts when you reinstall them or they work loose.
