I am having some "popping" coming from the collum on my '01. I think I have narrowed it down to either a steering shaft or a bad bearing in the collum. Anyone else have a take on this. If I have to take out the collum how bad is it to do?

i believe what you have is a broken clock spring. it was very common with the '01's

there was a recall on it a few years ago.

they actually have to pull the wheel to install a new one.

maybe someone will chime in hear with the TSB/recall #

you shouldn't have a problem getting it fixed for free

If your airbig light is on and the cruise control does not work, then you have busted the clockspring.

If it's a squak, groan type noise then it might be a bearing in the column. I have been chasing this noise for years w/ no fix yet.

I have the same thing . I think its the tob bushing in the steering column. I have read it is a plastic one and they have toreplace the column for it.

You can replace your column with a aftermarket like flaming river or borgeson... I don't know how much luck people have had though. I'm sure they are much stronger than factory though. .

My truck has the same popping ,clunking, especially when turning the wheel with truck going real slow,it sounds and feels like it's coming from the steering colum not the intermediate shaft, but when I try to wiggle the steering wheel I have no play. The dealer has replace the steering box and the intermediate shaft which seemed to help for a little while but now it's back. I could swear it's coming from the lower steering colum where its goes threw the firewall.
